Minneapolis Indian restaurant owner expresses solidarity with protesters: ‘Let my building burn’

As riots escalated in Minneapolis in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the city’s police officers, numerous buildings were damaged in the unrest, one of which was Gandhi Mahal Restaurant on 27th and Lake Avenue which was attacked on Wednesday.

According to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page, the owner is taking a remarkably conciliatory approach to the damage to his business.

The post starts out saying that although the restaurant has “caught fire” and has been damaged, “we will rebuild and we will recover.”

“This is Hafsa, Ruhel’s daughter writing,” the post read. “as I am sitting next to my dad watching the news, I hear him say on the phone; ‘let my building burn, Justice needs to be served, put those officers in jail.'”

“Gandhi Mahal May have felt the flames last night, but our [fiery] drive to help protect and stand with our community will never die! Peace be with everyone,” the post continued...

I hadn't read @rocketsjudoka's update. It sounds like it is.

 

No, it didn't deserve it. But I applaud him for recognizing that it's only property and being willing to sacrifice for his community if it helps bring the officers to justice.

 

It is, from everything I have gathered.

 

You say that as if he had a choice in the matter. I think he's just trying to make the best out of a shitty situation.

 

That restaurant is well known in the area. Its a really cool Indian restaurant. The owner had this really neat aquaponics setup so he grows his own vegetables and harvests his own fish. The family that owns the restaurant has always been very involved in that community.

That makes me sad reading that. I sincerely hope he and his family come out of this situation in better shape.

The skeptic in me doubts knows we won't end racism or police brutality any time soon but hopefully when the dust settles we'll all find ourselves a little closer too.

 

Just heard that LEO Chauvin has been taken into custody by the state of MN.

 

I responded to this in another thread but I know for a fact that not all of the owners are that OK with their building burning.

 

On what charge? I can't find anything on it as of yet.
