I was watching a commercial during the Rocket game and it got me to thinking about songs that are badly overused in commercials and movies. It seems like there is a rotation of a half dozen or so songs that everyone uses. Here's a few I thought of... Unbelievable - EMF Right Here Right Now - Jesus Jones What I Like About You - the Romantics Who Let the Dogs Out Carmina Burana - Carl Orff (This is an opera and if you've ever seen a preview to an action movie, you've heard it. Funny thing is, what they play is only the last minute or two of the opera. The rest sounds nothing like that.) Please add to the list as you see fit.
those outkast songs...dunno the name g n' r - welcome to the jungle (which is a great song, but a little too over used at sporting events)
a) it's overused b) it's so friggin' good they can overuse it all they please as far as i'm concerned. i love that song. seems like i hear that "been a long time" song by led zeppelin a lot (know the song, not sure what the actual title is). or maybe i just hear the commercial it's in all the time.
have you ever noticed the uncanny resemblence of that song to jet's "are you gonna be my girl"? almost the exact same thing, beat wise. queen's 'we will rock you' has to be up there. radio wise, they took trapt 'headstrong', which is already a bad song, andjammed it down my throat over and over and over again. i cannot stand that song.
I hate that song soooooooooooooo much. This site lists what songs are currently being played in commercials: http://www.songtitle.info/
Carmina Burana is gorgeous. I love that piece. We played an arrangement of it for symphony once, it was pretty good for not having the vocals, but just wasn't the same.
Little nit pick: Carmina Burana isn't exactly an opera. Usually you have a whole choir (including children's/ boychoir), three soloists, and a whole orchestra up there. It's a song cycle, with a theme but no actual storyline. There are arrangements without the vocals for orchestra and wind ensemble. It's one of my favorites. The part you hear is "Fortune, Empress of the World" which is the first and last song. Usually you just hear little snippets of it, patched together in strange ways. O fortuna, velut luna, statu variabilis... Semper crescis aut decrescis Vita detestabilis Nunc obdurat et tunc curat Ludo mentis aciem Egestatem, potestatem Dissolvit ut glaciem... (Latin doesn't count toward the spelling contest, right? )
I can think of a certain song about a 7'6" NBA center that was used quite a bit last year. This year they seem to have figured out when to use it a little better. I still love it EVERYTIME I hear it there though!
Coldplay - Clocks it seemed to be the theme song for virtually every major sporting event of the past two years, but playing it during the trailer for that crappy live-action Peter Pan movie was the last straw.
Actually, it is more of a cantata (a very long one that) than an opera. "O Fortuna" is the piece from the Carmina Burana that is used and you are right that it is heavily overused. Orff loved to accent rhythms more than melodies in his works and also liked to draw on medieval influences. The "Carmina Burana" is actually a set of songs that are in Latin that were written in the middle ages and celebrated all the great things in life (there are several songs dedicated to drinking). "O Fortuna" begins and ends the set (there are like 25 songs). The second track, "Fortune plango vulnera" is almost as good as "O Fortuna" in my opinion. Oh and getting back to the thread, don't really have any songs in particular but the Chemical Brothers and some of their tracks seem to be popping up everywhere!
You wouldn't be speaking of Shawn Bradley, now, would you? I "really, really, really" hope not, Chance.
"Green Onions" by Booker T and The MG's...great song, but they use it *constantly* in bad movie trailers (usually when the lead character puts on a pair of shades, etc.).
NO KIDDING! It seems like it's the ONLY song any of the kids under 8 at my school know! I hear it almost on a daily basis from at least one of them. I've GOT to teach them a new song.
I KNOW this song will get old someday, but not today, and hopefully not for awile. The Texan's Pick for opening song was SPOT ON. C'mon, get down with the sickness!
