That glass half full thinking allowed Trump to take ad hoc victories by cherry picking the good parts and making quick deals with Japan and USMCA.

Those "personalized" win-win trade deals did not need much sacrifice or concessions because it involved dumping the hard parts to everyone else and relegated disputes and coordination to the WTO, the NGO Trump and China undermines by accusing the other of corrupting.

We had an 11 nation collaboration that was painstakingly hard to assemble and took years of compromise washed away during the election cycle because it sounded globalist and Oriental.

Ask any rancher in bum**** red states how they would've benefitted from TPP despite Trump's manufactured trade war with China.

Five steps back. One step forward.

    But a win's a win, right?

You already know the answer but you have to be dramatic as usual.

And for the record I think manufacturing should be big push to return to america but then people would have to want less and pay more.

Somewhere democratic with freedom of press, otherwise the US labor force will always get outbid not by harder working people but by despots lining their own and their cronies’ pockets at the expense of the country’s people and environment.

Based on the criterion above, my vote is for Canada.

I see your point but if they are being paid a fair wage i think some would be willing to do those jobs.

yeah? but it is nothing like Mexico's California. UK tried to take Tibet as their colony but China took it back. What to talk about? Mexico will take back California some day in the future? That's your implication? or are we going back to year 1271 when Tibet became a province of China during Yuan Dynasty?

I can't speak for manufacturing labor, but we use a ton of IT labor (educated labor) out of all the spots you'd think. Mexico, China, India, Vietnam, and Eastern European countries like Hungary and Poland.

Price-wise for "low cost" countries: most expensive to least expensive:

    1. Mexico
    2. Hungary/Poland
    3. India
    4. China/Vietnam

For perspective, Mexico is about 3 X more expensive than China and India is probably 1.5 X more expensive.

Mexico is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the cost of the US.

For I.T. I think Philippines area was big for a while
I can see Mexico being expensive esp if they have a lot of American trained employees

I wonder what is the PER SEAT or PER CALL cost of most call centers.

Hungry and Poland is harder to deal with because of the EU. Better to go with the Balkan countries not in the EU they are cheaper and you don’t have to go through the red tape that is the EU.

I don't get it. Why is there such resistance to getting stuff made right here at home and paying a premium for it? Even if household goods were to cost double or more but lasted 50 years like they used to is this such a bad thing? People say 'but it would cause an economic crisis' or 'the poor wouldn't be able to afford it', sorry but I call it BS. People don't need a tv in every room in the house or a new phone every six months. As far as a crisis, well we are already here so we should take advantage of the opportunity and provide much needed good jobs for people out of work. People take pride in working with their hands and making good quality products and getting paid good wages for it. This would be the best thing to happen to the working class in this country in a very long time.

Is anyone else sick of this culture of cheap, disposable, horrible quality goods made with total disregard to labor laws, human rights, the environment etc? And this just so we can get a shopper's high and go buy more low quality crap every weekend?

Every product has a different demand and story
    And every consumer is different

We need critical products such as medical be produced here

so if a Hong Kong , Daryl Morey hating government decides to stop producing face masks we don’t need to be held hostage

    here’s an easy one

    Basketball shoes

Is this WNBA character a Chinese propagandist or something? Seems to always be apologizing or defending the actions of China. Speculation, but it is interesting that the join date is right around Yao Ming's rookie season.

I get the consumer demand for products dictates where they will be made, and that people almost always would rather pay less, but I am just focusing on the fact that the trade and production infrastructure we have is just not working for the working class in this country. The pendulum has swung too far and we have this culture of crap goods and a pretty horrible situation for the working class. I am all for the free market, but perhaps it should be more regionalized, and we shouldn't be dealing with countries with despicable records of human rights/slave or forced labor to obtain those cheap prices.
