In many European countries, the portions of meat are much smaller. That was my experience eating in the homes of people I had met, and away from the typical tourist areas there, the food in small local eateries is much the same. Some of the best meals I had in France, Italy and Spain were in working class neighborhoods. Now I'm getting hungry just thinking about it, and I had dinner about an hour ago.
So here is my opinion based on having a Working background on the topic. I believe that Trump can keep them open by claiming they are part of the food chain and shortages would cause panic. Having said that, these places will gladly stay open if they get immunity from WC claims or tort claims. Currently employers across the nation are fearful of WC claims from those that test COVID19 positive AND possible lawsuits from other family members that get sick. The federal government is going to be highly motivated to protect businesses because they don’t want to open Pandora’s Box. The government cannot force employees back but they can do things like not provide them unemployment benefits. These are extraordinary times and a lot of government overreach will be tolerated. While I agree that employers should have an obligation to protect there employees; I believe the Democrats will lose the public opinion battle on this issue. People want food and meat and will screw poor immigrants and those that work in process plant if it means more food on the shelves.
Bill Maher isn’t my favorite but he did have a really good “new rules” I saw last week about our meat consumption institution and how we essentially are hypocrites for judging China on their wet markets. He’s right and we do have problem with our meat consumption. We eat so much meat that demand has encouraged these “plants” that pack in hundreds or thousands of mistreated animals in small so spaces for an inhumane existence that needs antibiotics to be just healthy enough of an animal to make it to the butcher station. Maybe it’s a sign we need to chill on pigging out on a pound of meat for every meal.
People absolutely need to be more conscientious about where their food is coming from. The options are there; yes they're more expensive so you'd either spend more to buy the same amount or change your diet patterns and consume less (which would be ideal). I have no faith in the average American becoming an educated consumer, though. eta: also, as I'm reading it, there are no requirements in this executive order for the companies to change their worker safety standards. At least one Governor (Iowa) has said any current employee not showing up to work will be viewed as quitting and thus will not be eligible for unemployment. And with the GOP push for limits on liability the workers will have no recourse. What a sh!tshow.
This is Iowa's own doing. I salute them for being a statistical guinea pig that won't discourage their voters from doing the same...cuz they r free. Keep it dumb like Kansas and fly under the radar of expectations and contributions.
Happy to keep them open, not so happy with shielding them from liability for infections. Plenty of companies have taken it on the chin for this pandemic, including mine, so I don't have any problem telling these companies they have to take losses.
Unfortunately this affects much of MN too as we've had a few meat plants shut down due to a COVID outbreak. I wonder if the DPA applies to the Spam Museum? Might be something to do if open..
One way to change consumption habits: raise the price on the stuff you don't want people to use as much, lower the price on the alternatives. It's probably time for a meat tax (and sugar tax) to deal with a lot of the negative externalities.
Some of ya'll would swear oxygen is bad is Trump said it was good. Ya'll wanna hit the guy for trying to keep the food supply chain going? Pathetic.
