This is not a fair analysis in any way.

Should a person with a net worth of $30k have to donate 1/4 of his net worth to match Bill Gates? To be "as philanthropic"?

    No, that's idiotic.

Bill Gates net worth right now is, per google as of RIGHT NOW, $101 billion dollars. $101 BILLION DOLLARS.

So when you say I have no idea what kind of wealth that is... on the contrary, given the comment you're making above about giving away 1/4 of one's net worth, I'd say I have a better feel of it than you. To the extent I realize the dude could give away 90% of his net worth... and STILL be worth $10 billion dollars.

    More in the spoiler...

Good thing you mentioned Oprah... cause its an apt person to consider in my 90% scenario... since if Bill Gates gave away 90% percent of his net worth... he'd still be worth almost 4x (FOUR TIMES) as much as Oprah ($2.6 billion net worth).

So let's be 100% clear about this. Am I throwing stones? Absolutely not. Am I amazed and hugely celebrating a dude worth $100 billion+ dollars on giving away 25% of it to philanthropic endeavours?? Absolutely not.

That said... I actually believe the Gates started The Giving Pledge. Which means they plan to give away actually 50% of their net worth, as do all those who sign up for it. But again, we're talking about people so rich, it doesn't matter one bit.

Cause again, I ABSOLUTELY understand how much money he has. He could give away 90% of his net worth, keep $10 billion, and then give the next 1,000 descendants of his $10 million each before giving it all away. That would make each of those people worth more than 98.9% of American households.

Sure, he could also give away 0% of his net worth. he can do whatever the f he wants. but it's certainly fair to say his net worth is a result of his life, which is a result of an endless scenario of items, from parents, upbringing, hard work, luck, good management to the country he grew up in, the tax structure, the political environment, etc, etc, etc.

There's a reason why out of 1.2+ billion Africans there are only 20 or so billionaires - worth a combined $73 billion (google search just now... so all together less than Bill Gates), while out of 330+ million americans, there are 600+ billionaires. By the same token, it's why numerous studies have shown the role of "luck" in "success".

    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazin...uck-matters-more-than-you-might-think/476394/

Interesting tidbits: 50% of worldwide income distribution is due to country of birth and place within that country. People born in June/July are typically less successful monetarily. People whose names start closer to the beginning of the alphabet are generally more successful, etc, etc.

Again, he can do what he wants. Numbers and statistics are just that and with huge sample sizes, anyone can probably become anything.

And we're WAY off topic here anyway!

Do Brits get as frustrated at Americans as Texans get mad at Californians for putting the word "the" in front of certain nouns?

    Example:
UK: The Prime Minister has been admitted to hospital.
USA: The guy in charge has been admitted to the hospital.

Texan: Just get on 45 and keep going North til you smell the smug stench and youll know youre in Dallas
Californian: Hop on the 101, then connect to the 405 and youre there.

yep, gates dons those mr. rogers sweaters still trying to repair his monopoly image -- let's not forget he was a pirating forger in decades past. so whether or not he's changed his stripes now is certainly up for discussion..

This assumes that giving his money away is the most efficient way for him to make a positive impact. If he had given his money away 30 years ago, for example, the impact he could make in the world today would be greatly diminished. Just as an example, he probably wouldn't have been able to create the Giving Pledge later on, which has leveraged hundreds of billions in additional money to charitable causes.

tldr - Bill gates is smarter than you, has more money than you and is more charitable than you. Just data/facts, nothing personal.

    Next.

absolutely. All the more reason “so and so gave away x% of his wealth and is the y most philanthropic person ever” doesn’t make much sense in the first place.

be a nice, good person valuable to the world in any way you can while taking care of and bettering yourself as much as makes you happy. /end.

Buy an eight ball and go hard at it for one day and all night. Do a few lines and you get really high. Then, you come down an hour or so later. Then, repeat. Trust me when I say you won’t want to do it any more the next day going forward because you will have the worst cocaine hangover ever. Sleep it off and flush whatever is left. Also, hope you have a good heart and don’t have a heart attack. My final recommendation is don’t do anything I said. I’ll save you the trouble. It sucks!

You are using they to cover quite a few people. Perhaps you could specifically name the people who ordered the parks closed. Then name those who are pushing to open businesses in the very near future.

I was just talking to friend who is recovering from the disease. She’s in her early thirties and said that the coughing and chest pressure was horrible. I asked her about the loss of smell and taste. She said she lost her sense of smell right before her fever set in. I’m wondering if that could be an early indicator of the disease.
