So then you're saying Steve is wrong? ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
I am going by all the information I have, which is CC.net, his basketball cards, and my nba2k1 game which all say that he was born in '78. ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
this is absorbing me...like trying to figure out who Doc Rocket is, or something. How can we not have agreement on Francis's age? LilStevie3, so you don't believe in nba.com? I will give you the fact that nearly every draft day article I found said he was 21 (meaning 1978). More info...this is getting weird... here is a timeline for Stevie's bball career that has been confirmed by Stevie quotes!! (Trust me, I could pull them.) I'm placing his age next to the years on the assumption he is 23 yrs old, just to show how questionable that looks.
1998-99 20-21 Maryland starter (Coach Williams calls him 20yrs old...a 1978-scenario) 1997-98 19-20 Allegany JC starter 1996-97 18-19 San Jacinto JC starter Summer 1996 18 AAU Summer Tourny for 18 or younger 1995-96 17-18 Milford Academy finishing school DNP--left after one semester 1994-95 16-17 senior Montgomery HS DNP--in mourning 1993-94 15-16 junior Kennedy HS DNP--broken leg 1992-93 14-15 soph Montgomery HS starter 1991-92 13-14 fresh Montgomery HS DNP--academically ineligible
In this 23 yrs old timeline, notice three things. In Summer 1996, he plays in an AAU showcase for 18yr olds and under. As a senior at Montgomery, he is 16 until February??!! Milford Academy is widely known as a bastion of illegal practices for attracting athletes who are academical ineligble for Div I. In all fairness to Steve, his mother died when he was a senior and he basically stopped caring about HS. Now, who here knows anybody who was 16 up until Feb of their senior year without skipping a year. I don't. I don't even think my school district allows kids to enter school so young. I'm beginning to think somewhere along the line this unlucky kid decided to lie about his age to get a second chance, maybe to Milford, or maybe to the AAU committee. And now, as finalsbound states, he is back to giving out his real age of 24. So, if Stevie is 24yrs old, he lied to the AAU Committee. Is that bad? another thing to consider LilStevie3 is if Stevie3 did lie a Lil' and the trading card companies correct it...then your cards will be even more valuable as Lil' Stevie3 mistakes.
Well then this is getting weird. I just watched the Minnesota game again on tape and sure enough, Steve celebrated his 24th birthday that night. Someone needs to send in "How old is Steve Francis" when they ask for the Compaq Question of the game! ------------------ "They couldn't shoot, rebound, or pass, but other than that, they played great!" -Bill Walton
finalsbound....cool. I really did think I remembered the game celebration after you mentioned it. I likely have the tape too, but haven't found it yet. I definitely believe you. Steve IS 24 yrs old! maybe this is a clue as to why the Goodwill Games declined him....since he lied to the AAU Games. Now, I'm curious if those two committees are related. I told you this is absorbing me. soap opera stuff, isn't it. LOL! <--- that's for ZRB
heypartner, looked what you started. Your post with the timeline was a great read. I was pretty sure that he was 23, because of the cards, game, internet, etc. This is still confusing to me, as there has been a big mixup, and most of the info on Stevie out there, if indeed he is 24, is flawed. ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
also, if Stevie is indeed 24, his upside is a LOT smaller than say Kobe, Carter, or Mcgrady, as Kobe and Mcgrady are 22 and 21 respectively, and Carter at 24, is already the biggest (not the best) superstar in the NBA. Shucks, I was hoping that Stevie was a little younger. Oh well, I'll live with him being a legit MVP candidate in a couple of years. ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
Wait, Mcgrady is 22, he just had his 22nd birthday about a week ago on May 24. ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
I think maybe its cause of the whole fiasco with Vancouver. Remember that Stu Jackson welds some power in the NBA offices now. He probably made sure Francis wouldn't make the team, seeing as how refusing to play for the team that drafted you isnt exactly goodwill... ------------------
Easiest way would be too hang out at the Cheesecake Factory for a couple weeks. He is bound to show up some time, and at that time, you could ask him. ------------------ Never Underestimate the Heart of a Champion
I REALLY want to know his age. ------------------ "They couldn't shoot, rebound, or pass, but other than that, they played great!" -Bill Walton
finalsbound, I thought you said that he was 24?!?!? ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
Okay, let me rephrase that: I really want to know how all these sources could have his birth year wrong. He's 24, but I would like to know how his age has been miscalculated on so many sites. ------------------ "They couldn't shoot, rebound, or pass, but other than that, they played great!" -Bill Walton
I checked his birth certificate and it has been signed by a doctor who I can't seem to locate and was not listed on the hospital staff records in the year that he was supposedly born. The doctor is listed on the staff three years prior to the year listed on the birth certificate and the stamp on the file also seems to coincide with that date. Soooo... I had Steve's tooth carbon dated (purchased it off ebay last year) and assuming his baby tooth was lost and replaced at the age of 8 that would make Steve 27. This would make sense because we all know that it takes a mature player to execute sucessfully at the point and at the age of 23 or 24 it would be extremely difficult.
