You know what, I read what you wrote here incorrectly. If you make distinctions between moderate Dems and a leftist, so be it. I don't follow the man enough to know, but will trust your take here. I'm CONFIDENT he didn't mean it as an anti-semitic comment. He's also someone who has a history of being over the top in his descriptions and this was a doozy. Lastly, he apologized. Apparently not enough. Well, he said it but stating that he alone caused his job loss isn't being honest. As far as crossing lines, I think you'd have to believe he meant to be anti-semitic and offensive. I simply refuse to believe that. We're in agreement on cancel culture. It sucks. He's moderate. I didn't read FB's post above closely and you can read above my newer response. Having said that, I don't believe you have to be on the fringe to be called a leftie or a rightie. He's obviously a lifelong Democrat and it makes him a leftie in my mind.
The internet says Chris Matthews is a net worth of $20 million. he’s also 74 years old. That’s old. Even if some still want to be president at that age lol. dudes just going to retire, get paid to appear on some shows here and there and otherwise enjoy retirement. Said some dumb **** obviously so the timing makes sense. But smart way to live life.
Considering what the network did to Phil Donahue, Ashleigh Banfield, Ed Schultz, and Jesse Ventura, letting him resign on air says a lot about what MSNBC finds offensive.
I never really watched his program and I don’t have a strong opinion on the man either way but I saw that clip where he compared the Sanders campaign to the German invasion of France in 1940. For me, the outrage over that was up there with some of the dumbest I’ve ever seen. It clearly and unmistakably had absolutely nothing to do with anti-semitism and was simply a comparison, even if not that great a comparison, between the quick, shocking and overwhelmingly successful German invasion of France and Bernie taking the first few states by storm in an analogous manner. It has nothing to do with National Socialism, political ideology or hate in anyway. The fact he got so much sh** for it was just dumb as hell.
Comparing the electoral success of the the first Jewish presidential candidate, who lost family in the Holocaust, to the German invasion of France is not a good look. It wasn't the only cringey thing he did in the last few days. I'd give him a pass for being 74, but he has a long history of saying really cringey things that others would have been fired for a long time ago. This isn't a gaffe by a small town mayor or a local football coach. This is a guy who makes millions of dollars for his commentary, for a network with a long history of firing people (see links in my previous post) for saying way less controversial things.
It's kind of shocking but somewhat understandable. His band has been kind of falling apart over the last few years. His sax player died and his violin player was fired for sexual harassment.
I'm not familiar with him, but watched the resignation which was classy. I take it he hasn't always been classy, but a good way to go out, imo.
I'm sorry to see him go. While I frequently disagreed with him (my significant other simply wouldn't watch Hardball), he was a true Democratic throwback. Matthews served in the Peace Corp for two years in the late '60's. He served on the staffs of 4 different Democratic members of Congress, including Ed Muskie. Mounted a failed campaign for a House seat in Pennsylvania. Served for 6 years as Democratic Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill's Chief of Staff. He was the D.C. bureau chief for the San Francisco Examiner for 13 years, and later a columnist the San Francisco Chronicle. Matthews covered the fall of the Berlin Wall and other important stories. The guy won numerous awards and held 34 honorary degrees, as well as being a visiting fellow at Harvard's Institute of Politics. What I'm trying to say is that Chris Matthews wasn't chump change. I'm sorry to see him go this way.
