I'm with Isabel, it's "Nightswimming" for me. I also really like "Undertow" from New Adventures in HiFi (an underrated REM LP).
Losing My Religion. That was the beginning of the end if you ask me. Man, that video still bugs the hell out of me.
"What's the Frequency, Kenneth" because it makes me think of Dan Rather getting his butt kicked. "Everybody Hurts" because its true.
Hehe - I know what you mean as I never understood what that video was about. Let me ask this question: Was "Monster" that bad of an album or has it gotten an unfair rap?
"The One I Love" The song just rocks. The video is awesome too. Butthole Surfers to a good cover of it, btw.
NightSwimming after that there are so many Out of Time is my favourite cd but Fables and Green are super.. love all their cds (monster is probably my least fav) adventures in hi-fi is the most underrated end of the world is probably my fav fast song of theirs tom's diner (by bingo handjob) and lion sleeps tonight are my fav covers Stipe says rem can be broken up in before and after Losing my religion......... i love all their stuff... including the new stuff..... love bad day when i was in NY last year, got to see them up close when they played the Today show
Unfair rap, IMO. It's actually one of my favorites, and yes, I like the others, and no, I wasn't that young when it came out. Not as many individual songs that stick out, but good for listening all the way through. Actually, the third song is way underrated (King of Comedy?) and then the next to last one. The whole album goes well with certain emotions. About videos - it took Beavis and Butt-head to make me realize that videos don't necessarily mean anything. I used to look at them and think, "wonder what that symbolizes?" and "guess that song isn't about what I thought it was". Of course, REM songs aren't always easy to decipher anyway. Worst REM song: that one on New Adventures in Drink Coasters (OK, not the real title, but describes my main use for it). Anyway, it starts out saying "I want to be your Easter Bunny" - WTF? I usually hit the skip button at that point. The last two albums are mostly filler, but they still come out with some of the best songs (The Lifting, Hope, Lotus, Daysleeper, Imitation of Life). We were just wondering why they can't do it every time. One of my Internet names used to be Daysleeper; I don't exactly work a straight night shift, but my day is shifted later than most people's if I have anything to say about it.
It's not that great, and it's certainly not up to REM standards. But it doesn't totally suck, either. I'd put a few of the cuts up against any of their work, though: What's the Frequency Kenneth Crush With Eyeliner Strange Currencies Let Me In
everything amending my list to add, everybody hurts. between that and the everything for my favorite, i think.
End of the World Shiny Happy People Losing My Religion Stand Everybody Hurts Hey, I got weird tastes.
