droxford: Okay then. You said before you kill them. Uncle Tim still has serious anger management issues and should definitely NEVER be allowed to have a pet. When it sounded like you killed pets, he couldn't wait to join in. And he was proud to tell everybody here he beat his cat. The cat peed on something? No surprise there. That's what cats do when they're being abused. Better than recommending he send them to the SPCA (which he should -- anything to get them out of his care), you should recommend he get psychological help immediately. He needs it. But to the guys who give you props: it's not always about an irresponsible pet owner. Sometimes it's about a pet who escapes (and maybe gets caught in droxford's traps and later gets killed). Sometimes it's about a stray (that also doesn't deserve death). Some people are just too ******* excited about innocent animals getting killed. Oh my god!!! He peed on my uniform!!! Oh my god!!! He scratched my car!!! First thing: NEVER have a pet then. Second: Learn that animals do that and they're not trying to piss you off. They're just being animals. They're not smart enough to know better. You ARE. If they're yours and you want to kill them, give them away. IMMEDIATELY. You should never have pets. If they're someone else's and you want to kill them, remember that they are probably a member of someone else's family. We live in this world with other people who are sometimes assholes and should know better. We also live in this world with animals who couldn't possibly know better. I agree that people should take better care of their pets, but when they don't, punishing them by murdering those pets is not only ridiculous, it should land you in jail. That's all anybody who does violence on an animal who's only acting natural deserves. The most foul thing about the droxford and Uncle Tim posts was that they seemed proud of doing violence on animals. That's disgusting.
Thanks for all for your thoughts. We completely understand the risks of having our cats spend time outdoors, but we all live with those same risks too. I would never want to deprive my pet the joy of basking in the sun, or watching a butterfly, bird or squirrel do its thing. If that was the case, we would rather not even have pet. I guess I am going to let them rely on taking care of themselves like we have always done. If the we notice the dog being out a lot, I will talk to the guy eventually and let him know about my concerns. It might seem cruel to say I will take that risk, but I care for my pets so much, I will continue to let them be free.
MEOWGI: I believe you care about your pets. But it wouldn't take a lot of effort to talk to the neighbor and just find out about his dog. It'd be good for your peace of mind. Also, you shoudl really listen to what Jeff said. It doesn't have to be either/or.
not to be an ass..but i have never understood animal cruelty. If u eat beef, pork or any meat for that matter, should you go to jail? no? well if beating an animal is cruel, eating it isnt? Oh but it is ok to do that to a cow or pig, they arent real animals, only cats and dogs are. right... What about countries in asian, where cats and dogs are a delicacy, should they go to jail? Is that cruel that they eat them? If so why? because you have them as pets? well cows are holy in indian and they cant eat them, does that make us wrong for doing so? Not tht i go out and beat cats and dogs for fun, or that i think doing that is right, i just dont understand the arguement for it. Seems a but hypacritical to me. same thing goes to vegetarians. Oh so animals can have rights but plants cant? i think there should be vegetable rights, what are the vegitarians gonna eat now? By the way if someone only eats vegetables thats fine, its the ones thats only eat vegetables and look at me with a crooked eye becuase i eat meat that annoys me. with that said i have probaby offended 80% of the members on here so im gonna stop. Im just confused about this topic, please some one enlighten me.
After this post, I'm done with this thread because I find many of the posts in here really disturbing, but just to answer the animal cruelty issue... I, personally, am a vegetarian, so it is my INTENTION not to harm animals of any kind. I even try to catch bugs in my house and put them outside if possible. Many religions believe that all lives have souls and that killing an animal is no different from killing another human. But, even if you don't do that, there is a reason not to kill animals. It is not necessary. If a child wandered into your yard and pulled all the plants up out of your garden, would you poison or shoot him? If you did, you'd of course go to prison and deservedly so. Animals are largely defenseless - particularly cats. What they do in terms of using your yard as a litter box or scratching your car is a MINOR inconvenience. Is it really worth the death penalty? That would be like you getting the death penalty for public intoxication. I'm guessing that quite a few of you would be on death row at the moment if that were the case. Actually, it's worse because being drunk i public is a choice. Cats do what they do out of instinct, not maliciousness or willful stupidity. And since we are on this topic, we are ALL responsible for the animal population of our cities. Because many do not spay and/or neuter their pets and leave them free to roam outside where they spread disease and overpopulate, we create the problem ourselves. What's worse, we woefully under-fund the organizations that help control that animal population. Instead of killing an animal that is on your property, try convincing the city to better fund animal control. Better yet, go get a humane trap from the SPCA, trap the animals and take them to the SPCA or to the Humane Society or CAPS. If that is too much work, make a donation of money or food or supplies to SNAP or the SPCA or CAPS or the Humane Society or some other animal shelter for their efforts to find homes for strays and educate people on the value of spaying and neutering. Animals do nothing to us out of intent. They are simply the innocent victims of our unwillingness to control their population through practiced means. Punishing the animals for our own bad behavior IS cruel. Mr. Meowgi: I understand what you are saying, but you are assigning human emotions to an animal that doesn't have them. You may THINK it is cruel to put them indoors, but that is just YOU assigning emotion to a cat that he/she doesn't recognize. And, even if they did want to go outside, sometimes we as the dominant species need to exercise judgement for them because their safety is at risk. Just like you wouldn't send a child outside alone and unattended because of the inherent risks to his/safety, animals roaming free outside face similar risks. In fact, animals living outdoors face far greater dangers than we do even in our own yards - toxic plants, bugs that carry disease, other animals that can injur, kill or infect them with disease, other humans (as evidenced by this thread), cars, etc. Animals are not built to live outside in urban areas because they are exceedingly vulnerable to the dangers that face them in those areas. You are NOT robbing them of an experience. You are protecting them from dangers they don't even know exist but YOU do. They can still get sunshine, watch the birds, etc. But, they can do it from a window or screened in enclosure. There are even portable screened enclosures made specifically for letting cats "outside" without the dangers of roaming freely. Hell, when I was a kid, we used to let our cat out in our backyard when we were out there, but she was on a LONG cord with a harness on so she could wander the yard without getting loose. These things might be inconvenient, but pet ownership is inconvenient. We do it because we love them. The least we can do is take every precaution to protect them.
I disagree. I don't think I am assigning my emotions to her. Her emotions are easy to understand. My cat will come up and bite me when she wants to go outside, we have had to keep her in or days before for medical reasons and I could tell she was depressed. Also, when she is outside, she will come scratch on the door for me to come outside with her, it is amazing. She loves to follow me around when I am doing yardwork, and when I get on the roof, she will even follow me up the ladder to join me. If we kept her inside from the time she was a kitten I would understand, but being outside is now in her heart. The street we live on has light traffic and besides the new dog, there are not very many threats around. If I lived in a different place we might of made a different decision regarding letting her out. She does come in for the night every night, btw. A zen master once said "Is it better to live deeply and fully for 6 months than to live 6 years without really experiencing life?" I guess my cat makes that choice every time I open the door.
I cannot believe how many people actually took that out of context. It actually gave me a good laugh. And to think that one poster feels I could possibly bust down his door and kill him and his family while they sleep and then eat their remains. Or that's how he makes it seem. I just took the logic of the majority of the people and applied it in my answer. I guess my dislike of cats makes me a bad person. Now, for my rebuttal: First: I said I whipped his butt. I didn't say I beat him. That is the typical BS these days. No one believes in corporal punishment anymore. I firmly believe a little physical punishment (not that I send them to the racks) as well as lots of scolding. "Oh no! You laid a hand on him! That's cruelty!" If you disagree, I don't care. Second: I was expressing my frustration. I said I felt like I wanted to tie him by his tail to the ceiling. That is much better than me wanting to hold him down and beat him with a 2x4. The only animals I have killed purposely are rodents. I stomped a rat (quite large I might add) to death because he was in my trash outside. I killed many many mice that I caught in a live trap. It's not cruelty. It's animal and disease control. Again, if anyone disagrees, go cry about it to someone who cares. Third: It isn't my cat that gets on my hood. It's neighborhood pests I see every now and again. Since we just came out of a nice winter, I haven't seen them recently. I am sure that as the temperature rises the worthless furrballs will be out again. Fourth: I have quite a few pets and they all love me. I own two large breed dogs which cannot wait for me to get home no matter how long I have been gone whether it's been an hour or two weeks. I own a snake. I have two rats which the snake didn't eat so they are now pets. My wife owns two horses. I have that worthless cat who couldn't survive in the outside world because he doesn't realize he is a cat. Fifth: My anger about my uniforms traces back over a couple years. This isn't the first time he has sprayed. This is the first time he has pretty much ruined at least $1000 worth of clothing alone. I am supposed to maintain my uniforms. How am I supposed to do that with the pungent odor of cat spray? So is it cruel for me to feed live rats to my snake? I guess I am just a sicko who needs to be locked up, right? I'm baffled how these days that we won't hesitate to harm, maim, and kill each other but if an animal is being killed we have so much compassion. Werd.
Another thing is that I bought this cat because my wife wanted something cute and cuddley. This is the first cat I have owned as an adult and will be the last. He's on his way to the glue factory.
Blatz: I'm very sorry to hear about your cats. That's terrible. Though I capture strays and send them to animal control, I would not actually kill the animal myself, and especially would not kill an animal that's asleep in its owner's yard. methinks this thread is starting to lean towards the D&D section. Animals aren't people. It's apples-to-oranges to try to compare animals to people. I would like to further elaborate on this point, but a rambling of this sort certainly would belong in D&D. So, suffice to say, animals and people aren't the same thing. -- droxford
Those who don't find getting back at animals funny need to chill out immediately. Everyone knows that 99% of people who say they're going to do something on the web, or in a letter, or vocally are venting. And good for them! Better to vent than to act out. If I got a letter on my porch saying what these vents were, I'd worry. Not here though. It's simply letting out frustrations. Anyone here who has lambasted them was not intelligent enough to view the whole picture. Think about "Grumpy Old Men" where Matthau is looking at the kitty crap on his newspaper for the umpteenth time, so he sics a bulldog on him. Animals are animals. Killed a plant lately? What's the freaking difference?
And I'm not saying I kill animals. I'm saying I eat meat. Beef testicles are the only meat left that I'm looking to try, so if y'all know where to find some in Houston, I'm there.
