Is Yao Ming going to have an english name along with a Chinese name?

    Actually, Yao is the first name, and Ming is the last. "First" and "last" are indicative of order, not function.

    Ming is his surname, though.

    and Yao is his family name, clear now?:D

    actually people call him 'yao' because it's better to be pronounced and sounds brighter than 'ming' which actually means 'bright':)

    and what's more, in chinese the sequence is 'Yao Ming' and I think that's part of the reason why some people thought 'Yao' is the first name.

    so, no George Ming or sth.;)
