I haven't heard this possibility mentioned yet, but one would assume he'de be the frontrunner for 1st team all defensive center, correct? He is only the anchor of the 3rd best defensive team statistically in NBA history. His power numbers of 8.9RPG and 1.85BPG will certainly hurt his cause, but I would hope they will consider his monumental role in the team defense. The only other candidate at center I can think of is Ben Wallace with monster power numbers of 13RPG and 3.13BPG. Detroit is no slouch on defense either. Should Yao be 1st team all defense?

His offense is light years ahead of his defense.

I'd put Ben Wallace ahead of him. However, Yao is a pivotal part of the team defense for the Rockets which is probably 2nd only to the Spurs.

Are you kidding? Amare dunked on him twice ... how is that good defense? ;)

Honestly, Yao Ming is not ready to be put on that team over Ben Wallace, Tim Duncan, or whoever qualifies for that position of that talent level. I do see Yao with that type of potential, as night after night he seemingly scares opponents with his ability to close out on shooters. With the exception of Amare and Shaq, Yao has really decreased the number of times in which he has become posterized, and with Van Gundy's defensive schemes, those numbers are bound to decrease with time.

I think Theo Ratliff should be mentioned. He's blocked or changed a lot of shots since arriving in Portland.

His one on one D is really average but he plays pretty good team. Hakeem or Ewing he isnt yet.

why yao's block number is lower than some other best defensive players? that's simple. because the offensive players change their shots when facing yao. they either shoot extremely high, over yao, or differ to some other player who's not guarded by yao.

I'd say Yao's blocks are lower because he doesn't get a lot of blocks coming from the weakside. A lot of shot blockers block shots coming from the weakside on help defense. It seems like Yao is the opposite. He gets a lot of his blocks on the man he is guarding.

Its not that simple. You don't think opponents changed their shots when Hakeem, Ewing or Robinson were all over them????

I think a case could be made for 2nd and 3rd team for Yao, but Wallace is just sick.

No way he is not 1st team all defensive center.

I think one of Yao's weaknesses, as a shot blocker, is definitely his timing and explosion. He barely misses getting an extra block or two every game because he is a split second too late or he just can't react quick enough. The timing can be worked out with time and experience, but I am not so sure about the explosion part of it.

Interesting points, but I just dont see Yao beating out Ben Wallace at Center.

    Wallace
    Garnett
    AK 47
    Artest
    Christie

That to me seems like the first team defense. While I cant stand the guy, I suppose Bowen's name can be thrown out, but I wouldn't put him over AK 47 or Ron Artest.

Yao is a poor man-to-man defender, but a great help defender.

I disagree. I think Yao is a pretty good 1-1 defender. I have seen situations where he was checking Amare, KG and Tim, and all had trouble scoring on him. Besides Shaq, I can't hink of anytime he has really been dunked on unless he was playing help D.

defensive rebounding is a big part of defense and Yao is average in that facet.

I think this will be a key for blocks for him for his career. He doesn't have the lateral quickness guys like Hakeem had and that is key to getting over and blocking shots.

Yao's blocks tend to come when guys drive into him rather than when they drive to the other side of the lane and he goes and gets it.

WHAT! Yao is one of the best defensive centers in the game! He clogs the middle like noone else in the game. Have you seen Shaq defend the pick and roll? No, that's because Shaq plays defense only when he wants to.

No way. You got it backwards. Yao's too big to be backed down and very tough to shoot over. He's an excellent 1on1 defender, he's just slow on the help...as was stated previously.
