JVG will have his say at seasons end. Our selfish players that are lacking in Basketball IQ must find homes in other places. Its about time that the fans started calling for a Playmaker Point Guard, a taller Small Forward [possibly Mo Tay]and a Power Forward that knows how to play the game on both ends of the court, unlike Cato who is a liability.JJ could stay and play the back up Shooting Guard.
Fouling before the three-point shot - I'm not a proponent of it..it seems to end up with too many possibilities. The offensive rebound off the missed free throw, the steal on the inbounds pass, you're player proceeding to miss his free throws. Essentially, when you're up three, especially with so much time left, as oppossed to under 4 seconds, fouling before the three point shot is riskier, in my opinion, becuase it gives the other team a chance to not only tie the game, but win it, especially if the free throws don't work out in your favor. At the end of game when you're leading you want to reduce the number of possesions, not increase them. On clock-management - JVG does need to improve here. Often, the team is playing so stupidly he just has to call a timeout, but I saw no reason, for example, to call that 20 second timeout with 1 second to go on the shot clock. 95%+ chance even after the timeout nothing good will happen - better to save it in case you need it. In the end, though, most of the time we are left without a timeout is in games where we've lost the lead and the reason we have so few is because JVG has to constantly use them to "stop the bleeding"
Does anyone know what Van Gundy said after the game regarding an intentional foul in the closing seconds of regulation to prevent a 3-pointer? Did he want to do that or did he decide to leave it in the hands of his defense? Me personally, I'd foul intentionally every time they're in this situation. If there's one area the Rockets are mediocre in defensively, it's the 3-point line. The game in Toronto, the game at home against Atlanta, and now the Phoenix debacle are all instances where the Rockets were burned by last second, game-tying 3's. They were able to pull out the win against the Hawks, but that took 2 miracle shots by Steve and JJ not to mention 3 freaking overtimes. The one recent game where Van Gundy had the Rockets foul intentionally was against Dallas, and what a shocker! They actually won that one.
there is always all kinds of possibilities regardless what you are doing. the opposing team could miss all 2 free throws, or one of them, the rockets could get the rebound, ... all i'm saying is in situation like this intentional foul for 2 ft let you have better control of the game.
ooh lookie! first post in 1.5 years and its to start a JVG bash thread! i'm listening. really. continue.
Let's review the astute and inciteful offensive strategy that our previous coach brought to the team...............Oh Yeah, he didn't have one. Look. Defensive schemes require some thought and discipline to implement. VG has a proven track record with such and has unquestionably improved same with this team. Offense in basketball is very simple. Pass the ball to the open man and make the shot. Use/create a mismatch (read Yao Ming against anyone else on the planet) to get a good shot and score. Run a few very simple offensive schemes like a pick and roll and score with the damn ball. These are things which the Rox have yet to master. Only so much coaching can do any good. The Rox have clearly shown that they bought into VG's defense and are willing to make it work on the floor. Now if they would just get a few simple plays, which don't involve Steve and Cat's playground moves and ally-oops to Cato, and run them we would not have all this silly complaining about VG's system. We don't need a system! We need team play on offense and to stop making bad decisions. Watching NJ, SAC, Dallas, even Utah, pass the ball is a beautifull thing, especially when compared to the hairball that is the Rox offensive effort.
Yes. Let's replace the coach who has led us to the playoffs for the 1st time in four years. Makes a lot of sense. If you can't recognize the job that Van Gundy has done here, and the progress the players have made in their game since last season you need to open your eyes.
