There is no question that a pro coach can be a major factor in a team's performance. I was expecting JVG to be one of those difference making coaches, I was wrong. I find JVG lacking in the following areas:

    1. Managing the rotation . Hersey Hawkins commented during the Memphis game that the guards were playing too many minutes and that they had tired legs in the 4th qtr. I think this may be spot on given what we have seen at the PG and SG position.

    2. Lack of flexibility. Inconsistent guard play has/is a big problem. JVG should be working in Eric P and Jim Jackson at the shooting guard position to see if he can improve the teams shooting. JVG seems to favor playing the same 8 guys, I think he should take a page out of Hubie Browns book and play more guys. While I think Mark Jackson and Spoon have been good pickups, JVG seems to be comfortable with players that he knows and has worked with. Another sign of his inflexibilty.

    3. Poor decision making. Questionable call in not fouling and allowing the tying 3 pointer to be shot against Phoenix. This is the second time in the last couple of weeks where he has run out of timeouts. Rox won the game last time (I forget who they played) but wasn't so lucky yesterday against Phoenix.

    4. Players Coach. I thought SF should have gotten a pass or at least not suspended for not making the team plane during the SuperBowl. Hell, if JVG had Alan Iverson, AI would probably be in lockdown at county for what he has pulled lately.

ummmm... so. he along with 27 other nba coaches won't be coach of the year.

how many more need to be fired before figuring out that it's not always coach's fault?

If we make it to the finals, which is a possibility, then surely he'll get nominated.

I'm sorry but your points are pretty weak. First off, if JVG played the guards a lot of minutes during the Memphis game it was most likely because Memphis is a small team and ALWAYS seems to give our big men trouble...besides did we not win that game..yes we did. Second, every coach in the league (barring injuries) works on developing a solid rotation...in JVG's case, he has an 8man rotation that he found works....why would he change that this late in the game when it has worked all season. I'll agree that he made some poor decisions in that game against Phoenix but every coach makes a mistake every now and then...no cause for alarm. And whatever the situation with Francis was, JVG dealt with it the way he saw fit...francis missed the team plane, putting his own interests first instead of the team's...a suspension was warranted....and now they seem to be on the same page and Francis has stepped it up lately.

With that aside though, JVG prob won't get COY....just look at what Hubie and Sloan have done w/ less talented squads.

It's going to be one of the following (no particular order):

    Adelman
    Bzdelik
    Sloan
    Carlisle
    Larry Brown
    Porter

but it will be Hubie Brown.

11th post in 1 year. do you just come on here every blue moon to drop an unintelligible stinker?

there should be some "not allowed to start a bash thread until you get past 100 posts" sort of a rule in here.

I don't see the point of this. What does his number of posts have to do with this (Mr. 303 posts to my name)? He made a specific point on a topic that thankfully has not been beaten to death and supports it with specific arguments in a well-formatted and articulate manner.

And, it isn't even a bashing post, as you suggest. He has pointed out flaws he sees in Van Gundy's production. He didn't say he was worthless or should be fired or whatever. Just that he's not coach of the year. That's not much of an insult.

I'd have to agree with Tiger and Omega. Van Gundy should not be considered in contention for the award because he hasn't done that great a job. It's not a big deal, as OS pointed out, since all that means is he isn't the best coach in the league. He's still good, but he's not done a pace-setting job either.

So, in other words, you want someone who is spineless - one that the players can walk all over. Looks like rockets688 is right.

And it won't be any contest but Hubie Brown wins COY in a landslide.

I doubt JVG will win. I think most likely will be Sloan

NOPE - Hubie (with Silas as a longshot - but James' ROY will most likely overshadow his performance)

Without JVG, this team very well may have missed the playoffs again this season. The Rockets' improved record this year comes from (1) JVG getting the Rockets to play as one of the top 2 or 3 defensive teams in the league and designing the offense around Yao instead of the guards, and (2) Yao's improvements that began mid-January. It's pretty clear to me that the meer presence of JVG as coach of this team has made this Rockets team a better team than it was last year. Coach of the year? Not with what Sloan and Hubie are doing but you can be damn sure that JVG will be a candidate.

Hubie will probably win but nobody has worked magic like:

    Jerry Sloan

To field a competitive team, presently > .500, with the (lack of)talent he has is truly incredible.

    1) The Rockets were already top 5 in defense

    2) Yao's improvements did not begin mid-January.

The Rockets' 'improvement' can be traced directly to Yao Ming's improvement.

Every coach has his own philosophy, or ways to deal with different situation. Some works out, others don't. The only judgement is the end result, and you cannot judge the guy after less than a full season.

Most of the coaches in this league use up to TEN(10) players during the regular season, then shorten the rotation to 7 or 8 players during the playoff. Hubie Brown is unique in that he's using 10-man rotation in all games. JVG is unique as well in that he uses 8 man rotation in both regular season and playoff (when we are there). He explained that way he won't have to make any rotation changes when playoff is coming. Obviously, the disadvantage is that it will take a toll on those EIGHT players late in the season.

The ironic thing is Rudy T. was blamed for using Francis & Mobley too heavily last season. Now, JVG is doing the exactly same thing.
