He's not forcing the issue because Steve and Cuttino have been on this team a long time. Maurice and Cato are veterans too. In order to have the team make the leap to the next level, the Rockets must do what the Kings did when they got Webber. The Rockets must purge everyone. Kings dumped everyone to make sure that Webber knew that this team was his, and he was the now the tenured leader of the team. Look where the Kings are now. They've built a roster that takes advantage of Webber's strength. I imagine that CD and Van Gundy had mixed emotions going into this season concerning whether or not Yao could be built around. I've already discussed many times why Steve's and Yao's game do not mix. One must go, and it doesn't take one game to figure that out. It has been an entire season of inconsistency.
you're exactly right. don't think that the rocket management does not know this. in fact, i think they have handled this perfectly. had they gotten rid of steve, cat, etc. at the beginning of the season, imo, yao would not have developed as quickly as he has this season. yao needed to be forced to take over the reigns, as opposed to having them handed to him. it is clear, now, that he has snatched control of this team; and in the offseason changes will be made to reflect the new franchise player. for now, enjoy the season and watch how far yao carries a team that isn't even built to his strengths. his complementary players are talented, but are not the type of players needed to coexist with yao. so, we'll win some games, maybe even get out of the first round (depending on the matchups), but will ultimately fail versus a team that is properly assembled around their star. fret not. it is a necessary growing pain, and one that will serve us well in the future. having to do this teaches yao to overcome obstacles greater than his opponents. in a sense, yao's teammates are opponents. is this were war, yao would be fighting the enemy while having to fight his teammates' battles, as well. next year, yao will be able to turn his back on his teammates - knowing that they are fighting the same battle he is fighting. eh, bad analogy but you get the point.
i think its pretty funny that people not named chris webber believe that big lie told in sac-town. "chris webber is the kings best player!" that is said the way a mother says her baby is the worlds best, its placating at its finest. the kings built a no name team around webber??? i guess thats why they came out with one of the best records in the WEST without their "star"? please, sell that crap elsewhere. the rocks always have a hard time with quick up and down teams. we will lose most of the time in the regular season, but our halfcourt style will be rewarded in the playoffs. watch.
I'm not sure if Sacramento is the best example anymore. I don't know if it has a singular leader since they have so many talented guys playing important roles, but if they did, it would be Peja, not Webber. Besides, I don't think they purged the old team for Webber's sake but because they used to be bad.
Peja might be the best player, but the team was built around Webber. Peja was not the guy back then that he is now. The fact is Peja fits Webber's game anyway. The fact is the Kings reworked their entire roster to fit Webber.
Read the thread I established about combo-guard led teams. Yao was the last guy of significance to come to the team. Van Gundy is being forced to fit Yao in with Cuttino and Steve. From now on, everyone should be acquired to fit in with Yao and not the other way around.
This is basically a trade Steve thread, and I've got np with the Rockets trading him for either a solid point guard or power forward, but with that said: 1. SF will get a chance to prove himself, as floor leader, once the playoffs begin. It's up to him what happens after that. 2. I like the fact that SF was sticking up for YM, and I hope YM learns from that. Here you have a guard taking on a power forward, because he didn't like his center being disrespected. I like that attitude, and I hope it rubs off on YM. Raven
For some reason everytime I see your nick, i'm thinking "Cry Me a Rocket River" So when I see you post about a broken record, lol
BTW, Steve is the leader of this team always has been and always will be. I'm not surprised he did that to Amare, got a lot of respect for him, he aint playing to his talent this year, but he is a keeper, I just think they need to move Mobley outta there, because in some sense Mobley is like that bad friend who encourages the semi decent kid to do drugs. Without Mobes whispering in SF's ear that he da man, SF's true leadership would shine
with this title i didn't see this trade steve thread comming. to bad. i should have known it was a trade thread becouse Charvo started it
Yup. I have to accept it's the Chinese culture that being a junior you should respect senior "elders"
I'm actually getting extremely bored with these trade threads. It's already way to late to be even contemplating it and we might as well critique and discuss how we can get better with what we have at our finger tips. I believe we've got a great core and one that is a year from being stronger than even the kings. All we need to do is stock up our bench with some more taller fire power and we should be set. I am not at all against Francis's decision to get Amare for busting his boy Yao. I'm hoping we get a defensive minded small guard that can also play small forward but is at least 6'8 so we can guard the bigger and taller players. Size does matter! That's something we're lacking besides in Yao, Cato, Steve (if he continues to play point), and mo tay.
Really? One of the nastiest players in our league is Chinese and he gives no respect to elders. I am no expert on Chinese culture but I doubt that Yao's softness on the court is anything culturally related.
Some truth in that, I think Yao's "deference" to his teammate is culturally related, but sometimes people just arent born a certain way. Yao just might not feel self confident yet. As for Asian culture being a soft culture. Look at Bruce Lee, would you wanna call him soft?
I think reality lies somewhere in between Yao and Bruce Lee. I wouldn't want to deal with either one of them in a dark alley.
Agreed. I think the truth about Yao Ming is that he's a talented kid who's just not confident in his abilities yet, but is getting there. Got nothing to do with culture the way he plays, Kareem was a black man, but he wasn't known as a dunker though he was a tall dude. My first days on my job, I usually just tried to stay the heck out of other people's way. I think Yao might still have that feeling, got nothing to do with color, it's just how some people are.
