Circle C is a very pretty neighborhood. I was referring more to the Stassney, William Cannon type areas.
Come on, DD, I haven't made it to downtown (which I consider the Capitol) that fast in years. (well, maybe every once in a while... like a10am or 2pm or at night) It's true that it was an easy commute a few years back, but those days are over. Of course, you probably have a car I'd kill for. That would make it seem like 10 minutes. Besides, your offices aren't strictly downtown. No fair! I will say, however, that if being surrounded by an overwheming majority of Republicans is your cup of tea, then Circle C is the place! It's also pretty close to, despite what one or two mis-guided souls have said, the best BBQ around. The Salt Lick. (BBQ places farther out of town that may be better don't count. ) GV, the Allandale neighborhood is another nice one. Close in, but not quite as groovy as Hyde Park. Cheaper, though. Another area close in, and pretty expensive now, is Clarksville... just west of downtown, between Tarrytown and downtown. Another really nice area that's very close in is the Travis Heights neighborhood. It's just south of Town Lake and between S. Congress and I-35. Good luck!
Is a guy named GreenVegan76 going to be all that interested in BBQ? I used to live in Hemphill Park in 1975. Is that still a nice neighborhood?
I'm from Houston but I'm in Austin all this week........ the traffic sucks, build a freakin controled access freeway for gods sake. Stop lights on the main arteries? I heard they are going to buld a tollway loop around the East side soon though. How bad are the roaches in those old neighboorhoods? Unlike it sounds I do like to visit here, but I prefer to live in the neat sterility of new suburbia.
Gene, I live in an apt. that is likely 70 years old, and I haven't seen a roach yet. And, I'm not exactly a clean guy. dakota, Circle C is nice, but it's too suburbish to me.
10 minutes in no traffic maybe, but definitely not between 7a-9a and 4p-7p. I used to live(and now work) right at Monterey Oaks Blvd and Mopac. It will be a smooth drive when they finally get the highway extended. They've been "working" on that damn thing since I moved here 3 years ago. Gotta agree about Circle C golf. Great course! You live in Houston and you're b****ing about Austin traffic? That's crazy man! The only bad place to be is on 35 or 183 North out towards 620 during rush hour. You'll easily have a 45-60 minute commute. Mopac may look nasty during heavy traffic, but it is almost always a quick 15-30 minute commute even when traveling from the South side to North(or vice versa). Other than that, Houston and Austin aren't even remotely comparable when it comes to traffic.
compared to those gargauntuan mutant flying tree roaches in h-town, austin bugs are laughable. 9 years in austin in about 9 different places and ive never had serious roach trouble. if moving here i would check out the east side...specifically cherrywood off of manor rd. i live there and there is alot of houses for rent right now. its quieter than hyde park, where i previously lived, almost as nice and a hell of alot cheaper. since mueller airport closed a few years ago the east side is getting alot better, but rent is still very cheap for a central location. i live about a mile east of UT and have a 3 bedroom house w/ a huge yard for $1150/month.
Thanks for the tip. I've seen a lot of houses for sale in eastern Austin and virtually none elsewhere. So I took that to mean it's not as desirable as the rest of Austin. Guess I was wrong -- thanks for clearing that misconception up, dude! (googles eastern Austin)
Just east of I-35 near downtown was not so good when I was there. But out 290 it was nicer once you got past Ben White Blvd towards Houston. May be it's better now. You actually need to watch out for crickets in northeast Austin. A friend lived in a apartment and said it was ridiculous. I lived off of 360 and the scorpions were an issue in some places. It actually isn't as bad as it sounds, much less nasty in many respects than the cockroaches that are almost everywhere in Houston. It may be better to move there and live in apartment and do recon from there for a house.
Last I heard, some of the fwy improvements in our area of Austin were delayed due to cost overruns in Houston and Dallas. And you come here and complain about it?
Yea, just pulling your chain. I was trying to navigate from the Erwin center to downtown to Mopac on Friday at 5 PM with Lamar under construction. I still think it's laughable that quaint Austin didn't have the foresight to build controlled access to Mopac and 360. Your tooling along Ok then you hit a half-mile back up at a stop light. 620 is going to look just like FM 1960 soon. My friend is working on a right-of-way for a tollway around Austin on the East side but it is atleast 7 years away.
For a 1000 sf older home meaning pre-1950's, here are the desirable neighborhoods in order. Tarrytown(by lake austin, old money, kinda like west U)- 200-350K Rosedale (by the hospital, lots of doctors, quiet) 200-350K Clarksville(old money, some old mansions) 200-400K Hydepark(older neighborhood by school, hippiesh, lot of rent houses) 180-300K Travis Heights (used to be the ghetto, up and coming neigborhood, just south of downtown) 180-280K You can get some cheaper homes in other areas, but they are very close to some really bad neighborhoods, and any kids would go to school with some real thugs.
rockbox, aren't those prices amazing? You could get aa brand new 3500 square foot house in Corpus for 150K. In a nice convenient neighborhood as well. But, you have to live in Corpus.
