In Sunday's Houston Chronicle, Jonathan Feigen reported this about Pau Gasol:

Is this true, that there is a math formula restricting buyouts to rookie scale numbers? And is this $350K above the rookie scale or above the salary the rookie signs for (which can be as much as 120% of rookie scale)?

Based on this quote concerning Gasol, I'm trying to find out where Gasol must be picked in order for a buyout to be possible.

    If Feigen is correct, then:

    1. Gasol must be picked by the 7th slot for a buyout to happen (assuming the limitation goes strictly by scale numbers), or

    2. Gasol must be picked by the 9th slot and paid 120% of rookie scale for a buyout to occur (assuming the buyout limitation is based on salary paid).

Who thinks Gasol is worth waiting a year, and probably having to trade up to a Celtic spot to get him? Who thinks Gasol is worth a bigger trade up to #7 or #9, so we could buy him out?

It almost looks like the math of picking Gasol is going to effect the Celtics and, thus, the Rockets.

He actually misspoke, the buyout is 2.5 million (from other readings) and Pau is willing to spend up to 2 million on the buyout. His agents are saying the break off is top 5... but of course they'd say that.

    achebe,

Thx for confusing me even more, and putting all numbers in jeopardy. [IMG] I don't see how the math works for people saying "top 5".

Readjusting according to the rookie scale, and your $2.5m number, and Feigen's $350K number, it would have to be:

a 4th pick if the buyout limitation is based on the rookie scale, or

a 6th pick if the buyout limitation is based on the rookie's actual salary (assuming he'll get 120% of scale).

I don't see why the #5 is the breakpoint by any numbers shown, yet. I guess we should just take it as truth [IMG]

No, no... I like your sixth slot. [IMG]

Of course the agent is going to say the break off is a higher pick than it really is, merely to get people talking about Pau and to also take advantage of the dumb GMs that usually hang out at perennial lottery bound teams.

The biggest win is the fact that the lingo goes "well, if you pick him up here, he'll come"... it's just getting people used to the notion of a player being equated w/ a certain draft slot.

Mmmmmm... 6th slot. So heyp, do you think a 13, 18 and 22 could merit a 6th and 27 from Vancouver (maybe even dropping in the Chicago pin pick)? Or do you think that the Rockets will bore us all, yet again, on draft night?

heyp knows he's a SF. I think that heyp thinks that Pau is the only SF the Rockets are really high on...

and if he's only available in the states for x amount of dineros at spot y then heyp wins the bet.

    but little does he know...

Oh, and I see from your mock draft achebe that you are declaring yourself in the bet.

    noooootttt yet.

I'll make my bet after the draft [IMG]

Like you guys have anything to lose. "CriscoKidd", "heypartner". "Achebe" listen to that name... Achebe. It's so strong, virile, handsome.

    Achebe! Timmay!

Actually from since75's post I'd have to assume that the Rockets aren't going to take Jefferson... and that I should update my mock. Since I don't think Rodney White is going to last until 13, I would think that the Rockets would be happy to take Bradley at #13... but then I have him going to the Celtics at #10.

Do you see my problem here?

The Rockets have Mo Taylor, more or less in the bag. Unfortunately Mo doesn't "know rebounding" (or however that commercial went). That would be fine, if the Rockets had a C that rebounded.

Do you see my problem here?

Loren Woods is a *****. Is it too early for Brendan? Clutch has suggested on the front page that CD likes a certain player that's a Center, but should be available for a later pick. Would they pick two Centers?

Do you see my problem here?

Common sense suggests that if Bradley is gone, that the Rockets should pick the best C or SF at #13. I'd guess that a Jefferson at #13 is stronger than a Haywood at #13, especially since Ken Johnson will be available at #22.

Draft time sucks for Rockets fans. I'm going to become a fan of a team that would pick the way I would like them to.
