Honestly, as blatantly partisan and goofy as this stunt is... if this pushes Joe to the back of the pack in the Dem nomination race, all the better, if you ask me. What we don't need is another, half-senile, out-of-touch dude in power. Have had enough of that in my lifetime. And I really don't accept that Biden is the only one with a shot at beating Trump.

Pretty much anything is allowed. We've had 2 impeachment trials ever so...not a lot of precedent. The double edged sword though is that Biden can refuse to appear, like the entirety of the Trump cabal in the House proceeding. They can try to forcibly compel, but they (and by they, I mean John Roberts) would have to logically compel all the far more material Trump figures (Rudy, PimpUSAout, Pence, Johnson, Bolton...and Trump) to show up. That's an obvious risk. Unless of course Roberts reveals himself as a true Sith. And we know that's the team he came from..so that's a nonzero probability
