This Administration has cut the number of refugees admitted, has threatened to cut it completely, and is also clamping down on asylum seekers.

The UK gave up direct governance of HK on the surface but it still kept a non-negligible influence and vested interests in HK afterwards. After the UN resolution, the UK made multiple attempts to retain HK's status (e.g. by extending the lease) in the follow-up negotiations with China. The attempts failed and both sides find a compromise in the "one country, two systems" governing model of HK. After the signing of the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984, the UK started to maximize its own interest during the pre-handover period before 1997.
    • It started to democratize HK in the 80s and lifted a couple of regulations right before the handover to limit the power of the local government.
    • It conferred UK residency rights on 50,000 HKers and their families, who were mostly elites in various fields
    • It trained a large group of local civil servants based on the value and the political system of the UK, many of which remained in the government after the handover
    • It supported a couple of pro-democracy parties to speak for the interests of British investors and related companies
    • All of the above led to a weak HK government controlled by pro-UK people within and outside the government after the handover
    • Multiple public construction contracts were signed between the government and British-invested companies
In general, the UK made a calculated move to exchange direct political power for financial interests and implicit influences with China. That is one example of how international politics works.

It doesn’t matter, if congress overwhelmingly pass the bill to grant HK “freedom fighters” green cards, the president can’t veto. And since Americans are so used to meddle other guys businesses and make others trouble themselves, then this is the sensible way to do it.

And don’t forget Chile people,Iraq people, Iran people. They have far more casualties than HK does. Hundreds of ppl are dying there. They need help too.

Why doesn't UK grant citizenship to so many loyal subject of her majesty? I am sure if half of the protesters left or UK, there would be better opportunities for jobs, the housing price would fall, everyone would be happy. and UK could gain so many highly educated talents.

UK is very bad country for the jobs, and housing, can not afford more people coming into their country. UK is just poor although people do not know it very much.

Of course, some Hong Kong people want to go over there, I think they prefer to come to USA.

Xi government just sucks, he makes everything worse.

    This.

At this point from what my family is telling me, in Hong Kong if you have any wealth and are not a native mainlander, you are not getting out. They have tried bribery and at this point are terrified to go further.

I expect the CCP to be restrictive.......... what is completely unacceptable is the response of the USA when it comes to getting people from Hong Kong into the USA. There should be no objection, these are people that want to be in the USA, that are strong supporters of democracy. They are in large well educated, have job training and in many cases have money as well. There is no real risk........ yet they are not pale enough looking to get in.

    We should take them.

We need more diversity and the cultural difficulties will be limited. .

Not sure whether any of those brave freedom fighters dare to throw a petroleum bomb at a NYPD officer, or shoot an arrow at any police officer in any US city, or attempt to grab a gun from a police officer in the motherland of freedom, while covering his body with tattoos of “democracy”. I will bet you one dollar that he might receive 20 real bullets in his body with unanimous support from democratic congress.

Journalism has died long time ago. People are brainwashed everywhere, just by different institutions. There is no moral or justice, but self-interest.

People arguing online just to kill time. Does anyone really hope to convince or change others? People want all kinds of things but you can only demand it when you have that bargaining power. People in NY Chinatown can want independence or sing whatever national anthem all they want to, or they can go anywhere they want to if they can afford or are accepted by where they move to, but demanding that piece of land and blocking roads and attacking police? You got to be kidding me.

As if waiving a democracy flag gives you free pass from some media and makes everything alright. What is the difference between this and all the past crime done in the name of nationalism or whatever noble cause in human history, be it by Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Americans, Britains (who was a prime example of leaving democracy behind)?

spy offer info on China meddling in other countries

    HK, Taiwan, Australia, all countries

Mr Wang said the Chinese Communist Party under Xi Jinping “infiltrates all countries in areas such as military, business and culture, in order to achieve its goal.”

“You shouldn’t underestimate our organisation ... We were cultivated and trained by the organisation for many years before taking up important positions”. The Chinese Communist Party “wants to ensure no one threatens its authority”.

Huh. Sounds like he's describing an actual deep state global conspiracy, versus the comic book one we tend to discuss in the US. LOL.
