Avoiding the Pappa's/Goode places that everyone knows about: Blue Fish - Thai/Japanese sushi bar & grill Jake's Philly Steaks - best cheesesteak in town West Gray Cafe - comfort food galore Teotehuacan - best Tex-Mex in town Kanomwan - Pole knows all House in the Heights - prix fixe, byob, great date place Auntie Chang's - great dumplings & takeout Fancier places - Aries, Backstreet Cafe, Hugo's, Damian's, Brennan's, Rainbow Lodge, Beef & Bird, Lynn's
There is a new cheesesteak place in a strip mall right at Buffalo Speedway and the 610 feeder road, near Reliant Stadium. I have never been there, and don't even know the name, but a friend of mine from Philly has been there a couple of times and raves about it.
And now, my faves. Limiting this to down-home shizzle, otherwise I would use up all of Clutch's bandwidth, and the monkeys flinging poo in the D&D would be hunting me down with shotguns. Avalon Drug Company (I love their breakfasts) Frenchy's Fried Chicken This is It (best soul food in Houston) Williams Brothers Smokehouse (best BBQ ribs and brisket in Houston)
It is a brew pub. Their red ale is OK. Their porter is excellent. The pizza is real Chicago style and very good. They are located on Bay Area Blvd just east of I45 (but before you get to Old Galveston).
there's a lone star cafe in san marcos at the outlet mall. only been there once, it was pretty good. i do recall hearing of another lone star cafe in the area, but i'm not too sure where.
Java Java is good, but they always seem to take alot of time. Sandwich King on Longpoint and El tiempo are where I eat the most.
I rarely go out to eat. Food is generally better when I cook, plus I'm faster and cheaper. And, as a venue for entertainment, I don't seem to really get as much out of it as other seem to. But, of the times I have been out, my best experience was at Bistro 829 (which is way the hell out in Katy).
Yeah I just ate there yesterday. Good stuff. Also, for breakfast try Buffalo Grille. Mmm, pancakes *drool*
pizza: Fuzzy's (best by far!) tex-mex: Los Cucuos (I bet there's better out there, but haven't found it yet) misc. asian: Kim-Son or Fu's Garden hot dogs: James Coney Island bbq: Otto's or Goode Co. hot wings: Buffalo Wild Wings italian: The Grotto or Cavatore (both are a little pricey, though) giant burrito: Freebirds (best by far!) diner: 59 diner 24 hour: Spanish Flowers Cajun: Treebeards (1st), Floyds (2nd), Pappadeaux (3rd) I have eaten at Konnomwan and... I don't really know how to say this... the food was very good for authentica Thai food, but I don't like Thai food. I mean, I didn't like the food, but the food was very good (I know that sounds weird). It's very authentic and if you like Thai, you'll love their food. In the tex-mex category... El tiempo - very good, but pricey Ninfa's was ok a long time ago, but they went downhill. Somewhere in this city there has to be a tex-mex restaurant that is cheap, not filthy, not scary, and delicious. The closest I've found to this is a hole-in-the-wall place called The Mexicatessin (but it's a little scary and may or may not be clean). -- droxford
Goode Co. BBQ Chuy's J. Christopher's Shanghai River Kenneally's (nobody does pizza for drunks better and great place to watch Rockets as well) Berryhill Tamales I'm pretty lowbrow in my culinary tastes, but I have also enjoyed Post Oak Grill and Boulevard Bistrot.
I just had lunch at one of my favorite lunch places. Central Market. Grab a salad, and on a sunny day, grab a table outside, and watch the babe/MILF parade. Me and a close friend have been making a habit of this, especially on days like today.
