When Yao is out of the Game . . . What do we do? Cato and Steve These two seem to have some Good Chemistry Steve's Drive and Dish to Cato is near perfect In the Laker game the scrubbed the Lakers 4 times with it These are the type of things that should be going on This is the 'secondary' Offense I envision with Steve and Cat I DETEST when steve and Yao are talking to each other on the bench Unless it is Garbage time . . THEY TALK ON THE COURT cause they should NEVER be on the BENCH together one should be in the game at ALL TIMES Steve's Drive and Dish is getting better When those shooter [u know the ones that make YAO hard to Double. . ] are hitting .. Steve penetrating With JJ on the Wing and Cato Moving to the Goal is IMO a good COmbo When YAO is in the game Cato should still move around the goal I STILL beleive what works on the post up . . can work on the Drive and Dish Rocket River
It's called the Mo-Taylor offense. That way nothing changes. We still run the same plays. The other important question is who do we have the court when they go zone. We need some zone busters out there. Someone is gonna have to step up.
I would rather go to the guards instead of the same inside outside when Yao is not in there. Lets have penetration and dish like Dada said. Besides, when Mo plays the inside/outside, it never comes back outside anyways No, truly, we need to get the guards involved when Yao is not in there. Also, our big guys need to run more.......
Someone else made this suggestion, so I can't take credit...I think JVG should let Steve run the offense when Yao is out. Kinda like what the Lakers do with Kobe and Shaq. We know Steve can score when he is in control of the offense, I think JVG should try to get as much as he can from Steve when Yao is resting. Kinda like "Alright, Yao is out, Steve it's time to get yours." This will also make defenses defend 2 different styles. They will start focusing on how to stop Steve and penetration, and then you bring in Yao and they immediately have to change their entire defensive scheme.
This is two way street. The Rockets also need to make transition to play two different styles and need to do this quickly. If they can do that, I am all for it.
When Yao is out of the game, ... sometimes our offense run better, sometimes we sputter big time. We played worse when we have worse match up, i.e. some one quick to guard Steve or someone big to guard MoT. We played better when we have better match up. When Steve can shake his defender loose or when MoT can score down low. Does not matter who are in there, it is a game of match up. We need to exploit out best match up, create double team and opportunities for other players.
This team runs its offense much better when we have a legitimate low post presence in the game. Clearly when Yao is in the game we are at our deadliest, but when Yao is out we need Mo Taylor to be IN to be our low post player. Without Taylor or Yao our offense looks like a chicken with its head cut off. We just run around and do dribblemania and take bad shots.
Gotta go with Deuce on this one. SF and Cat got skillz but if there is no direction or set play, they will just dribble the ball for 20 seconds then launch up a brick.
Who is in charge of the SET PLAYS? I think JVG needs to draw up some and implement them. Rocket River
I'd actually run the old "Iso motion" offense that we used to run; not pretty, but it got some points on occasion. Clear out to one side, penetrate, look for a cutter/spot up man. Either that or a steady diet of Catomic Pick & Alleys w/K-2 and SF, maybe my favorite play that we have. Rocket River: JVG runs TONS of set plays, and we run them quite frequently, especially out of a timeout, that's one of the reasons why SF and Cat chafe a bit at times, as their creativity and freelancing has no place.. Last year, we barely ran any.
Cato in the game with Yao? Eeek! It almost begs the other team to cheat with the PF, safe in the knowledge that: 1. Cato very well might not even catch the pass. 2. Even if he does, he'll miss an 8 foot jumper most of the time. 3. He's such a poor ball handler, he has almost no hope of taking it to the rack. 4. He's such a poor passer, he won't get the ball to an open man. Cato is a liability at any point on O... but even more when Yao's on the floor because it puts even more pressure on his post position.
