I was just looking at some of JVG's comments about the Wolves. It struck me that he is WAY more complimentary about their play than ours. Not sure (and perhaps it is not deserved), but has he ever had anything positive to say about the Rockets? I think dude is a 'Sour-puss' and could at least explore positive reinforcement for a change. I just dont like his tactics.
I,m reminded of somebody asking Bob Lilly (or some other Cowboy) Tom Landry ever smiled. "How would I know, I have only known him for 10 years" was the answer. Or there abouts. JVG is just a dot your i's with a type of guy.
I just love his sarcastic, pessimistic, demanding attitude. Our players really needed to be pushed to play ball the right way and he won't stop being negative until our players do so consistently. He knows that if he says too many positive things, our player's heads will get too big and they will revert back to their old habits. The players are professionals, and JVG is pushing them to play ball like professionals. You need a thicker skin and learn to appreciate what he's done this year. We are actually playing like a team.
do you want a cookie?! heres a cookie! Whos a good boy!? Whos a good boy!? Jeff Van Guny rules. I have been stoked all season about how he is our coach now. did you see that part of last night when griffin missed the 1st free throw and he was about to shoot his 2nd and jeff was dismissing to someone "its all right its all right. he'll make this one." waving off the worry with hand gestures with a 'im not worried about it i know hell make it sistah please' sort of a face. then he lowered his head and had this inner-conflict/introspective/anxious wheels a turning sort a look. THEN he looks up with yearing big believing eyes towards griffin as if he is trying to will the ball in! JVG is so intense! i love that!
Sure, the guy's a prick, but that's why he's here. The Rockets specifically wanted a coach who wasn't interested in any more excuses and they got one. No, he doesn't have a pleasant attitude, but he's like most of the (fairly insane) fans on this board in that he's only interested in results, not self-congratulations. I believe Van Gundy enjoys the wins as much as he feels the losses, but until the Rockets are a consistent team playing EXACTLY how he wants he's not going to be throwing any parties. We wanted a no-excuse coach and we got one. We must now lie in said bed whence we have made.
our players tend to only see what we did right, so there is no point to confirming that. JVG is a players' coach, not a PR type one.
JVG gets it done with a stick. There are many different ways to coach, and I think most of them work. It depends on players' personalities, the team's talent, and who was the last coach to what suits a given situation best. TBH, I don't really like JVG's style of motivation. But if it gets the job done, it's fine with me as long as he doesn't cross any lines.
Isn't there anyone here who is managment? I'm sure there is. It has been my experience that some positive reinforcment can bring the marginal players to the next level and give the upper tier a sense of pride, purpose, and ownership. Sure, you gotta tow the line (like when SF missed that game and Griffens' saga), but all that is not ruined by the occasional slap on the back. I think JVG needs to take a pill.
Win, don't you think that Van Gundy makes positive comments to his team in the locker room? Personally, I'd love to see a tape of Van Gundy's before game, halftime, and postgame speeches to the team. That's where you really see the connection between players and the coach. They seem to show them all the time in football, I wonder why not in the NBA.. Anyway, I saw several positive comments by Jeff after the Wolves game. He talked about how they shot well and took advantage of opportunities, as well as stepping up their defense when it counted. Doesn't sound too negative to me. Most pro coaches are not going to sit there and gush about a regular season victory. What do you want him to say "I'm asking Stevie to come to San Fran with me so we can get married!"? Call me a VG-only fan if ya want to, but as much as I love Rudy T, I think this has been a positive change for the Rockets. later, Jeffster
JVG will have lots pof positive things to say next season when he gets what he wants from our new playmaker Heinrich.
He mentioned something about saving a bunch of money on his car insurance. You know, that little Ford Focus he has.
He should do those commercials! [JVG to Yao] I've got some great news for you, big fella. [Yao] You're going to make Steve pass the ball more often? [JVG] Don't be stupid. I'm gonna to coach the way I'm gonna coach and he's gonna play the way he's gonna play. However, I saved a bunch of money on car insurance!
monday's chronicle: "At times we were discombobulated," Van Gundy said. "But I think the biggest factor to winning in this league comes down many times to just having enough toughness and courage and discipline to just make one or two more plays than the other team. That's what we did."
He does occassionally say something positive. But, he feels compelled to temper that with also recognizing something negative. This compulsion to always say something negative doesn't make him a prick, nor does it make him tough, as his boosters like to say. He's just a sour-puss. Ultimately, the style is self-defeating. Valid criticisms that need to be addressed will be drowned out by compulsion-driven, throw-away criticisms. Hopefully, his players can get a better read on him than the audience.
You think some of his criticisms are compulsive driven and not valid? Please list quotes by JVG himself. Everything he's said throughout the year is right on target to me.
