I have a book of 'home remedies' for getting rid of pests (garden & home). They might have some non-lethal ones in there, but it isn't handy to me at the moment. One I remember though is this: Take a bucket and fill it with enough soapy water to submerge the critter you want to get. Stretch some paper across the top and secure with a rubberband. Cut an X in the center. Hang a piece of food over the X. The mouse (or whatever critter it is) will test the paper before it gets on to make sure it's solid. It will feel solid to him because it is pulled taut. But, as he nears the center, he'll slide through the X and (eventually) drown in the soapy water. It sounds to me like a particularly cruel trap.
Fox Urine is a real rodent treatment. We use it to keep squirrels out of the attic. The liquid stinks but doesn't smell in the house. I think we bought it at Carter Country. My wife works with the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition. She rehabs baby rats, err squirrels.
Not an endangered species...? Not sure how that matters. My cat is de-clawed, plus he's fat and slow. Exterminators? Fox piss? Maybe I will just get some traps... Thanks for the responses everyone.
There is some stuff that you can buy at a feed store that enables them to get real thirsty and run out to find water...They come in a block of bars, however, if they can't find a way out, it can get real smelly...
I admire your compassion! There are a few humane mousetraps out there. Just be sure to keep an eye on them, or the mice will starve to death inside. Good luck! http://www.themousedepot.com/ http://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/B13863543.htm http://www.seabrightlabs.com/mouse.htm
i used glue traps, then wrapped the trap/mouse in old boxer shorts and pitched them out the 6th floor window of my apartment onto my super's terrace. after about ten, he got the message.
I can see TheFreak catching the mouse and then doing all this work to drive it out to a field to release it. And then as he drives off see some huge vulture swoop down and snatch it.
As a kid my family used to use those "humane" mouse traps (my dad is an animal lover). We'd then all get to hop in the van and take a trip to the nearest large field to release them all. What a great bonding experience!
Actually I was going to suggest normal, toothed cats. They take quite a while to actually kill a mouse. So you could remove the half-mutilated, still-alive mice from your house once your new cat presented them to you.
I didn't read all the posts in this thread. I couldn't make myself do it. So if someone brought this up already, sorry. Do the electronic devices that emit high frequency sound work? I know they're available, but I'm not sure if they work. I've seen them at Home Depot. You could give that a try.
