Spring Break has already hit my university, and for a switchup this year, I'm going to visit a few friends that I've never visited in Portland, OR. While I realize it's not the usual sunny spring break fare, I always love visiting new cities, even when they don't have the glitzy look. My buddies are always telling me how beautiful and amazing Portland is, so I'm taking the opportunity now.
So anyways, anybody have any suggestions on what I need to see? Good restaurants/activites, etc?

You're only an hour's drive from the slopes, so why not go skiing.

Another thing that's nice is the the Columbia River Gorge, it is about 20 to 30 miles from Portland. Theres also the Oregon coast that's about 90 miles from Portland. I hope you have a good trip.

Hey man, I grew up there. It was a good place to grow up in and get the hell out of at age 18. To visit, it's a nice city but I hated living there, and to this day it seems like I can't stand to be there for more than about 3 days without getting very irritable. I'm actually headed to Oregon for spring break as well (eastern OR though).

Anyway, as Baqui said, Mt Hood is only an hour away, although as warm as it's been there lately the snow might not be very good.

One nice thing about Portland is the multitude of brew pubs--if you like beer you'll be in heaven. I worked across the street from the Rock Bottom Brewery in downtown last summer--kind of a trendy hangout. Also, the Springwater Grill on SE Milwaukie Ave. is good for lunch and dinner--if you don't want the expensive gourmet food they have a great bar menu as well.

Nature wise, the Columbia Gorge is your best bet. Multnomah Falls is nice but it's a madhouse on the weekends. If you want a nice tour of the gorge, take the old scenic highway (not I-84, but the old two lane road the freeway replaced) out to Cascade Locks and cross over to Washington and return to Portland/Vancouver on SR 14.

You'll probably enjoy your stay--it really is a nice town to visit. But living there and watching moss grow for 18 years royally sucked ;)

Any more questions let me know.

I'm not native, but I have friends and family there. You can go to The Edgefield Brewery (McMenamins), a par 3 golf course that has a bar on every hole . That is fun but you have to get reservations like now. You can also go to Union Jack's Stip Club. The walls are completely covered in mirrors, and it has a cool retro feel to it (like every other place there). It's the place Dave Chappelle went to on his Portland Insomniac episode. The Portland Saturday Market is kind of fun too. Hawthorne Boulevard can be fun to cruise, there just seems to be pubs and pizza joints everywhere you go. Once get get outside the city, the scenery is incredible. Portland is a blast.
