If it comes to it, Tilman can always try to offer Morey extra money to "resign" and stay quiet. That way everyone saves face and it may be enough for China to reverse their ban on the Rockets.

But not sure if Morey is greedy enough to take the offer or if Tilman is too cheap to make an offer like that.

Reading through this thread is more evidence of the gulf of understanding that most Americans have about China and Chinese have about the US.

Every time I explain what is going on in HK right now I always start with the Opium war. The Chinese defeat in the Opium war was the lowest point in Chinese history and started what the Chinese consider a century of misfortune and humiliation at the hands of foreign powers. The return of HK was considered a redemption for that. Further in the last 30 years since Tiananmen the PRC has been building up nationalism and that the highest ideal is one China. As part of this the idea that foreign powers (mainly the US, UK and Japan) do not want to see a strong China and want to see China divided. As such any movement such as Tibet, Taiwan, and HK is seen as attempts by foreigners to humiliate and divide China again. While the PRC is still Communist in name this has nothing to do with Communist ideology. Confucious and the Qin Shi Huang Di (the first emperor of China) are far more revered while Marx is relegated to the background. This is an aggressive nationalism along the same lines as MAGA.

At the same time in the US we have lived with diversity of thought and ideological opinion. It is understood that many can hold different sometimes diametrically opposed views yet still work together (up to a certain point) I think most Chinese are aware of that but do not fully understand it. That Daryl Morey might have a political opinion that might not be shared by the Rockets' organization or the NBA might not completely register. Instead it would read more as that Morey is an important figure and if he isn't sanctioned that means that the organization actually thinks that way because that is how it would work in China. While as Americans it seems obvious to us that Morey is expressing a personal opinion and that opinion has no bearing on how he does his job or what his employers think that isn't obvious to people raised in a culture where group identity is very valuable especially the higher up you go in that group.

Unfortunately it's these type of misunderstandings that I think will lead to Morey losing his job and will continue to cause problems between us and the Chinese.

If Fertita fires Morey because of this I doubt other NBA teams will hire him, not for awhile at least. The NBA has invested a lot in the Chinese market and they don't want to risk that.

Ok. If you are referring to chairman Mao and the cultural revolution, yes, even the Chinese govt acknowledged that it was a mistake. But I still do not know where you get that 36 mil figure.
Every country has historical dark times, even a great country like US killed native Indians and discriminated against the blacks.

Yeah, the skit with one of them playing “Broken Hallelujah” on the piano after Trump won and the whole cast was crying through their sketches was classic! It’s the hardest I laughed since Eddie Murphy left the cast.

Speaking of not respecting the results of a democratic held election, didn’t half the losers on that show promise to move to Canada should Trump get elected? What ever happened to that? It’s really sad to see how far off that show has fallen each decade.

I could be wrong and it woudln't be the first time but I'm looking at this through what happened to Kaepernick. Like his politics or not he's still better than most backup QB's and even a few starters. The league doesn't want to risk offending a big part of their fan base. The Chinese market has more than three times the people of the American market. Out of all American sports the NBA has invested the most in it and it's been paying off. For as much as we love the Rockets as Houston's team this is a for profit business and the bottom line is the most important thing.

If Tilman fires Morey, no more Golden Nugget casino for me. I usually lose 2 to 5 hundred dollars every time I go. Sometimes I win, but it's few and far.between. No Laundry. Also no more Chinese buffets. What a burger or bust.

Not just in China, i am sure in the US too, did you see what happened to the Pappa John's CEO making a racist tweet? What happened to him? He's out right? But wait a minute, he's just ONE PERSON, right? Nah, it works the same way. He's not JUST ONE PERSON, he's more than that, he's THE MANAGER of the Houston Rockets' organization. He can have his opinion all he want but if they don't align with the people he worked with or those his company is associated with....something got to lose, that's how it go in business.

    You are full of it.

    1. In 1997 when Hong Kong was returned back to China, Deng had promised “zero change and highly self independent government for the next 50 years” and Basic Law was drafted based on this promise. It has been since that the Chinese government trying to break their promise because of cause the ‘emperor ‘ had changed, and heck he even changed the constitution of China to allow him to be a dictator forever. Check out the history after 97 in HK, the umbrella movement and how this current mess in HK started before you split out fake sh’t.

    2. It’s a shame that you even want to bring out what h 30 years ago at Tiananmen Square, whatever you wanted and tried to cover it, the facts remain the CCP bloodily murdered students and civilians just doing peaceful protests to against corruption and seek for basic human rights.

    3. ‘As part of this the idea that foreign powers (mainly the US, UK and Japan) do not want to see a strong China and want to see China divided. As such any movement such as Tibet, Taiwan, and HK is seen as attempts by foreigners to humiliate and divide China again.’

    - this is exactly what I was always referring to, that’s what the CCP always tried to brainwash it’s people, every bad disasters, every different voice, every event that happened that may in danger of the current power, are always the conspiracy of western powers. That’s one of the most pathetic way to block all the information in this current era and the most shameful way to treat human beings.
