    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/columns/20010521/ratingthelotterypickssha.html:

"Best No. 1 overall pick: Shaquille O'Neal (Magic, '92)
The big fella from LSU has emerged as one of the top four centers ever"

If we take a poll of basketball people now, excluding casual fans, Shaq has a good chance of topping Hakeem in being in the top 4 centers in NBA history. If you take a poll of ordinary fans, Shaq will sweep. This is so irritating.

Anyway, I am sure that in Moses Malone's time, some people called him one of the top 4 centers in NBA history. Then Hakeem took the place. Now they are changing it again.

This is even more irritating: no Francis, but Baron Davis is there?

"Best No. 3: Grant Hill (Pistons, '94)
Hill, when healthy, is one of the NBA's best all-around players.

Notable No. 3s: Jerry Stackhouse (76ers, '95), Penny Hardaway (Warriors, '93), Baron Davis (Hornets, '99) "

Francis was drafted #2, not #3.

"Notable No. 2s: Antonio McDyess (Clippers, '95), Alonzo Mourning (Hornets, '92), Jason Kidd (Mavericks, '94)"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't McDyess drafted by the Nuggets??

I say Dream is 3rd best of all time behind Russell and Wilt.

Dream is the second best behind Wilt. Only if Hakeem had a sidekick superstar in his earlier years he would have about 4-5 championships by now. Damn I hope Webber comes here and we win two more titles with Dream! [IMG]

Shaq is not as good right now as Hakeem was in his prime. Any truly knowledgable NBA fan will agree with that.

However, I can't agree with you on Baron Davis. I'm not so sure Francis is better. Let's be honest: Francis is a defensive liability. He's almost as bad at that end as Kenny Smith was. I have to give Davis a slight edge right now to be honest. Also, Francis is not much of a passer. Average in that area. When he improves his D and passing, he can be mentioned as a great player. Right now, he's just good.

Come on. I am not so stupid to think that Francis was drafted No. 3. You don't see what I mean?

Do you guys think Bill Russell could compete as a 5 today? I don't see it. Today's game is so much more powerful. Wilt was not allowed to dislodge like Shaq is nowadays. Russell was built like Pervis Ellison.

Personally, I wish the NBA played the game like that again. There was a place for Wilt and a place for Russell to excel. The leeway given to brute force and strength makes it tougher to compete against the few dominating centers.

In their primes, I'd rank them this way:

    1. Olajuwon (all-around)
    2. Abdul-Jabbar(offensive machine)
    3. O'Neal (power and mobility)
    4. Chamberlain (brute force)
    5. Russell (out of position today)
    6. Moses Malone (offensive rebounding)
    7. Thurmond (great defensive player)
    8. Lanier (great offensive player)
    9. Robinson (all-around player)
    0. Reed (gutty performer)

I loved the Celtics as a kid in the early 60's but I think Russell is overhyped because of great team success. I don't think he could play the 5 in today's game.

Yeah, but if you look at your original post, you were talking about number 3's in the draft and how Francis wasn't included.

    RichRocket,
Putting Hakeem at #1 is just being a homer. At least Kareem and Wilt were better, and maybe Russel as well. The jury is still out on Shaq.
