I have been very critical of Van Gundy's system in the past, but I always had faith that somehow he would pull the rockets out of despair and go on a long winning streak. This has not happened. After watching these low scoring games where the Rockets struggle to score brings up the question what changes need to be made? As I said before, the fact of the matter is that the Van Gundy's system is a conservative system based around the center position. This system plays a slow paced half court game that takes up too much of the shot clock. we have seen countless of times where the shot clock runs out before the rockets can even attempt a shot. This is due to the fact that the Rockets do not play a style that allows a high amount of shot attempts. There are no 2 man games, pick and pops, high screens, or screens where the 2 guard or sf can come off to pop a jumper. We see this in great teams such as the Kings, Mavs, even the Nuggets who beat us once this year. This game allows a very low margin for error. The rockets have to play a very good game to win whereas other teams may be less conservative and pop threes to comeback and win or close out games. that's why you never see us pull away except maybe in the fourth. that's why every damn game is close. This is ridiculous. Our slow downed game allows evern the Clippers or Hawks in the game. The Rockets don't have an open game as they once did in previous years. The fastbreak is horrible preventing the team from scoring easy buckets. There needs to be a quicker paced offensive scheme that allows more shots to be taken and an open court game that utilizes the strenths of the two dynamic guards. Also, starting Cato at the PF doesn't help much on offense and his defense is questionable. Van GUndy hasn't figured this out for some reason and MAYBE, if he gets a better point guard and a better bench this question would be moot. However, with this current team, the Rockets are no better than a seven seed in the West.
It's not just JVG. There's the tale of 2 Yaos, for example. Which one shows up? The one who holds his ground against Shaq or the one who can't handle Seattle? Where has Steve's shot gone? When both your studs struggle, it's simply tough to win.
Dude, shots are there...the ball has to go in...these guys are terrible shooters and executors of the game. How many layups do we miss, how many open jump shots do we miss, how many critical shots do we make... I will says this...their turnovers have dropped tremendously the last 3 -5 games......kinda ironic...
Yao did handled Seattle. Seattle couldn't handle him, they gave 10 FT's, should have been more. Yao missed a lot of shots he normally should make, but that's not because he couldn't Seattle.
I think it's because of who we played rather than how we played. Portland, Cleveland, and Atlanta are 3 of the top 6 worst teams at causing TOs, while SA and Seattle are only average.
the problem is the bench, we have no bobby jackson, ginobili, chris anderson or any energy guys with the exception of the occasional spoon. On games like seattle where the team has no desire, intensity, or energy, why not bring the bench squad in for a few mins rather than see yao nearly faint after being double teamed, or seeing steve brick 4 in a row.
On the contrary, Rox do have more open game than before. How many Rox games you have seen this season? Cato's liability in offense but NOT in defense. You're apparently biased.
How many have you seen? There's a reason our scoring is down this year. Did you even watch us the past three years? He's not necessarily biased. Cato does have serious trouble guarding mobile PFs (which the Western Coference is full of), and is pretty much a center playing out of position. He does his best, but that doesn't mean he's all that good at it. He has his on and off nights.
