It was such a foolish endeavor to begin with seeing as how expansive our natural gas pipeline system is in NA Absolutely zero economic incentive to chose coal fired plants when combined cycle gas turbine plants fueled by natural gas are far more efficient and cost effective.
I guess coal miners have this: in the current panic that liberals have over climate change, if the Democrats controlled the federal government we'd probably see rapid decline of coal mining. Trump at least keeps it on a slow death trajectory. A GND administration would not be willing to contribute to China's or India's giant coal-fired plant boom, for instance.
It's a difficult predicament. For most of these miners, it is the one skillset they have mastered and when you are middle aged and mastered a trade and are still years from retirement, changing career paths is almost impossible other than menial jobs. I genuinely feel bad for these people even if they support Trump in general. It's a shitty predicament to be in.
