Free Stuff Is All Over Craigslist and Facebook, and It’s Getting Weirder
The internet is groaning with freebies, as long as you’re in the market for piles of dirt, old lava lamps and used soybean oil

Other people might have thrown it away. When Rob Hayes discovered that one of his bowling balls was cracked, he wanted to find a new home for it.

In mid-January, Mr. Hayes, a contact-lens technician and part-time actor in Decatur, Ga., posted a picture of the bowling ball in the free section of Craigslist. “I’m trying to avoid putting this in the trash,” he wrote in the description. “Can be used as an art project, a lawn ornament or anything else that someone wants to use it for.”

Those not tempted by a cracked bowling ball might consider the myriad other items offered for free on websites including Craigslist, Facebook and Freecycle. Recent offerings include bathing dust for chinchillas, 23 empty beer bottles, a barrel of used soybean oil, five single-serving packets of Arby’s sauce and a Mongolian-language version of the Book of Mormon.

Various websites and apps have included free offers for years, but the pandemic appears to be expanding the volumes. A Facebook spokeswoman says the number of free offers in the website’s marketplace section nearly doubled in 2020 from a year earlier.

Locked-down people have more time and motivation to declutter, and that means more items to give away. Meanwhile, some thrift stores, which have already been inundated in recent years by Marie Kondo enthusiasts, have had to put donations on hold during the pandemic. So people with too much stuff are going online to unload some of it and arrange for handovers. Items are often left on a porch or a curb at a specified time.

Piles of dirt, old bricks, scrap wood and logs are commonly offered, as are bulky old TV sets, toilets, sagging sofas, tires, mattresses and moving boxes.

Posts often avoid hype. A dresser drawer on offer in Lincoln, Neb., is described as “functional and adequate.” A person offering two plastic buckets of gasoline in Las Vegas noted that the fuel was old.

Adam Mathews, a patent attorney in Lebanon, Ohio, specified that the barrel of soybean oil he was offering was used. Every November, Mr. Mathews deep fries turkeys as part of a charity he created to provide Thanksgiving meals to the needy. Within 90 minutes of posting the used-oil offer, he heard from a farmer who wanted it. “My understanding is he’s using it for animal feed,” Mr. Mathews says.

He often gives away spare items, recently including an old textbook on contract law. He says he enjoyed talking to the taker about his search for a new career, possibly in law. The personal contacts are “definitely worth more than the $5 you’d get out of it trying to sell,” Mr. Mathews says.

Melissa Smith of Oakland, Calif., is a serial giver and taker of free items. “I’ve gotten most of my furniture free,” she says. That includes “a beautiful huge gold framed mirror, a dresser, some gorgeous lighting, our bed and tons of plants.” It helps that she has a van and can arrive quickly when people want to get rid of something bulky.

On Craigslist, she recently offered a used lava lamp. “The lava is sort of stuck to the side of the glass,” her posting noted. “I watched some videos online saying it’s possible to melt off with a heat gun.”

The first day she posted the congealed-lava lamp, “two people hit me up about it and I put it out on the porch, but got ghosted by both,” she says. “The second day someone else messaged me and was really excited, and came and got it within about 10 minutes.”

Bob Hanson, a home repairman in Boston, has given away a huge variety of items, including plastic bottles for holy water and a shark-shaped pillow (a “cool thing” he wasn’t using). A single can of Trader Joe’s dog food, left at his house by a friend, so far has gone unclaimed.

In his basement, he had decades-old cans of paint, shellac and other household chemicals, some of it dried “as hard as a rock,” he says. Sure enough, someone wanted it.

Mr. Hanson doesn’t know why the taker wanted dried-up chemicals, but he says the vintage graphics on the cans were interesting. “I don’t ask questions,” he says. “I did remind him that these are volatile chemicals, so be very careful.”

Bob Rowan, a retired police officer in Montclair, N.J., has enjoyed giving away furniture, toys, tools and cookbooks, but found no takers for a copy of “Catholic Teen Bible,” even though he says it is in mint condition. “There are people I call my repeat customers,“ he says. “Sometimes I put them at the head of the line because I know they’ll show up.”

Not all offers are serious. Glenn Fullerton of Cleveland, who works for a cable-TV company, says he posted the five packets of Arby’s sauce as a parody of the crazy things he sees listed for free. In response, he heard from other wiseguys. One said he was driving from Michigan to collect the sauce.

In Decatur, Mr. Hayes managed to find someone who wanted 15 partially used bottles of bathroom-cleaning fluids that had accumulated in his house. He gave an old bathtub to someone who wanted to use it to wash a dog.

His cracked bowling ball, however, still hasn’t found a new owner. He wasn’t sure trash collectors would take it, he says, and “I was trying to be a little bit respectful to the environment by not throwing it in the dump.” If someone claims it, Mr. Hayes says, “the first thing I am going to ask him is, ‘What are you going to do with this bowling ball?’ Because I am curious to know.”
