honestly, I'm shocked 8chan is still operating after Christchurch. The place is full of subhuman trash. Bottom of the barrel
8chan certainly did less damage to this world than your stable racist president. US government will protect both.
8chan is not a place that radicalises people, it's a place where already radicalised people gather. People are radicalised on Youtube and Facebook, in plain sight, by mainstream pundits like Shapiro, Rubin, Ingraham, Carlson.
I seriously doubt that. Youtube personalities have their role, but there's nothing like personal relationships to provide the intimate indoctrination you need. They're the folks who can tell you the white nationalist you saw on video really did have some interesting ideas that you should take seriously. Having a community that interacts with you and validates your ideas is important to really ingraining an ideology into your personality, whether its white supremacy or Rockets fandom. Community is what empowers you to go from casual racist to ideological warrior. As I heard from some commentary this morning, if jihadists were meeting on 8chan instead of white nationalists, it wouldn't still be around.
This, 1,000,000x this. There is a toleration of white supremacy in America. My guess is that this country with its history is just more familiar with it.
I get your point, but I disagree. They may get radicalized to a degree by those sources, but it's when they go further down into the dark and find comrades to encourage them that they go full radical.
Edit: never mind. I figured out what you meant. thought jihadists wouldn't be around if they were using 8chan...
The reason we "tolerate" it is because going after it normally means going after white conservatives and then it looks hyper political and becomes a free speech issue.
I hit on this in the other youtube threads and I agree with your point about conservatives and free speech. That's why then I said about the youtube issue that if these people were Muslims preaching jihad on youtube no one here (In general) would accept that. If Youtube banned those videos no one would care or fight or claim free speech is being attacked. Google, Twitter, Youtube, etc etc have always done their best to erase Jihad propaganda on the internet and everyone accepts that as necessary. Yet, when it comes to white supremacy, that has been tolerated, it could be because you have mainstream conservatives saying the same things the white supremacists are saying and this has become a partisan thing, which is sad, but it is tolerated. There just isn't the urgency to fight against this like there is if this had been ISIS or the Black Panthers or some Mexican Cartel.
I suppose jihadists could take the strategy of congregating at radical free speech sites like 8chan so they can enjoy some of the free speech protections that the white nationalists get. The arguments between the two groups would be far more ridiculous than the partisan stuff we have here. (Though I'd worry they'd find too many areas on which they'd agree.)
The difference would be that the jihadists wouldn't be white conservatives. That's the cover, it's not the location of the website. Going after "white nationalists" brings a segment of conservative voters into the issue and that is why it gets tough to deal with.
Yup it's all about political clout. Jihadists don't have any political clout in the US(thank goodness) while white nationalists have immense political clout.
David French is a conservative writer and he put out an article about confronting white nationalism a while back (re-posted it yesterday) and a lot of conservatives have slammed him for it. Same for his articles about reforming police.
As I often hear from wealthy white business associates and acquaintances; "Well I wouldn't go THAT far, but you know I agree with them on a lot of things and they have to go over the line sometimes to battle those liberals pushing communism (socialism has not been replaced by communism the last year) and no one says anything about them." I usually follow it up by asking how far is TOO far and if Atlas Shrugged, The Fountain Head or The Objectivist is their favorite book......... and about half the time I hear back "The Catcher and the Rye".
The reality is that on the right and the left, the moderates are being chastised by the extremists within their own party.
The uber-left definitely chastises the moderate left and creates the perception that they are the same, but the Democrats elected Obama, nominated Hilary and are trying to nominate Biden. The right nominated and elected Trump.
