LANSING, Mich. -- A former Michigan sports doctor who parlayed his reputation and personal charm into years of sexual abuse of Olympic gymnasts and other young women was sentenced Wednesday following the riveting statements of more than 150 victims. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina sentenced Larry Nassar to 40 to 175 years in prison on Wednesday -- the seventh day of a remarkable hearing that has given the girls, young women and their parents a chance to confront Nassar in court.

"I just signed your death warrant," Aquilina said, after saying earlier that Nassar will "be in darkness the rest of his life."

"I find that you don't get it -- that you're a danger. You remain a danger," she said.

Aquilina said it was her "honor and privilege" to sentence Nassar.

"Inaction is an action. Silence is indifference. Justice requires action and a voice -- and that is what has happened here in this court," Aquilina said, before announcing the sentence.

The last witness to speak at Nassar's sentencing hearing was Rachael Denhollander, a Kentucky lawyer and one of the first women to publicly identify herself as one of Nassar's young victims. Denhollander contacted Michigan State University police in 2016 after reading reports about how USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians, mishandled complaints of sexual misconduct. Nassar worked at Michigan State and also was the national gymnastics squad's doctor.

Denhollander said Nassar groped, fondled and penetrated her with his hands when she was a 15-year-old gymnast in Michigan.

"Larry, I can call what you did evil and wicked because it was," Denhollander said Wednesday.

"You have become a man ruled by selfish and perverted desires," she said.

I'd actually feel a lot better if some people along the administrative chain were held just as accountable (i. e., jail time)...

...for this "doctor" to have behaved in this manner for DECADES, and to have been under investigation for these things numerous times--up to being on administrative leave for stretches of time...

...says to me that this was just as much an organizational failing as it was an individual one. Having administrative people at Michigan State simply resign from their posts just seems to me to be as egregious as the actual acts themselves.

Whatever this Lassert's predilections are...he doesn't commit the sheer VOLUME of offenses without access to the resources provided by his employers, who were at the very least aware of things he was routinely alleged to have done.

Yesterday, I thought I heard that he could receive "up to" 40 years. Considering he was already sentenced to 60 years on child p*rnography charges, I thought it was strange he'd get fewer years for actually sexually assaulting women, mostly minors. Especially considering how many victims there were.

I don't know that much about the case and where he might have been enabled by administrators. But yeah there is something pretty unfulfilling about this dispensation of justice -- he should have never been given the opportunity to rack up the rap sheet he did. He should have been found out long ago. It's a shame he was not.

A total of 156 victims yes 175 seems about right to me.

According to the accusers, his treatment involved vaginal penetration with his fingers for 20 to 40 minutes at a time!

My daughter does gymnastics. Every time I go there's over 100 girls in there and I'm suspiciously eyeing every one of those coaches. The gymnasium is a wide open room with nowhere to hide, but still. Hard to trust anyone these days.

Is it normal for a judge to be so emotionally involved with a case? I just think it's little unprofessional and unethical.

Ridiculous. This should be well known. So a young girl knows that this is NOT normal.

Agreed. I think others should be held accountable
There comes a point when incompetence becomes criminal

I fully understand what you are saying. My daughter is 21 now and going to college so we do not worry about this as much any more but when she was growing up and involved in so many things, we never left her alone with anyone. I always coached any sports teams she was involved in to make sure I was always there to make sure she was safe. These days, no-one can be trusted.

When I heard her quotes, it made me cringe a bit. I'm no lawyer, and maybe that stuff is fine in the punishment phase. But it felt like she was revealing a prejudice against the perp. Could he get a reduction on appeal?

The FBI is useless, corrupt and complicit in acts against children.

That agent may have been, but he isn't "the FBI." He's one agent.

So what is the motivation to keep this guy around when you pretty much know what he is doing? It's not like a popular coach.

This is not meant in an way to offend you - but how are other parents meant to trust you?

Whether they trust me or not is their prerogative. They choose to either let someone else be in control of their children or do it themselves. It is the same choices I had. My wife and I chose to always be in control by volunteering to do whatever we could. Sometimes that leads to a lot of work. Coaching competitive select soccer teams is a lot of work and is very expensive but I was always there for my daughter and my son before her. Coaching other sports took up a lot of time even though it was not as expensive but I was always there. Every parent makes the choice to trust others with their children or not. My wife and I erred on the side of caution.
