This is kind of funny... someone asks about who funds the Federalist right wing web site... mollie hemingway snowflakes it as a veiled threat and an assault on free speech. Which tells you... whoever funds the Federalist must be even more embarrassing than first thought...

Don't know who funds, but following my previous train of thought, I see that The Federalist is a for-profit entity.

Though, it looks like it couldn't possibly break-even charging $30/year for newsletter subscriptions plus some discreet banner ads. The articles are free. Looks like they have a dark-money incorporation. Which is probably the least accountable way to run a news organization (for good or ill). Maybe their editors are free and maybe they aren't. Wapo is like that too, except at least we know who the owner is.

Definitely. Unfortunately, I’m not sure the general public would accept those entities being non-profits and would find other sources that feed their biases.

:D But honestly there are some big name non-profit journalist outfits. The Associated Press is non-profit. NPR. Propublica. Texas Tribune. And a bunch of other outfits. They can be ideological -- e.g. Mother Jones has a rep for being pretty left. So, I'm not thinking about "better" as being moderate or non-partisan. But, maybe not so click-bait-driven or scandal-driven because they have a mission beyond maximizing shareholder value? Though, different missions can cause their own dysfunctions. If they rely entirely on the beneficence of a single wealthy donor, they may have to serve his political agenda. If they rely on donations/subscriptions of a readership with a strong political identity slant, they may have to be an echo chamber to reinforce their preconceived political ideas.

What? JV, I never thought to check. Thank you. @Os Trigonum's devotion to the site is explained. His hits keep them in business! Now my day is complete!
    ;-)

Excellent post, JV. I think a lot of people don't realize how many of these sites are operated. That there can be, for good or ill, backers behind the scenes who bankroll them for their own purposes. Backers that prefer to remain anonymous.

Controversial? Pastor Owens has made controversial statements in the past (about President Obama, AG Holder and gay marriage).

As someone who is center left, I do believe that 24 hour news and CNN specifically has a lot to do with what is wrong with America today. The whole news for profit and ratings is bad for America, and CNN has been on the forefront of that. They try to sensationalize everything for clicks. Fox is bad for different reasons.

    Huh?

The first is dismissable, the second is fireable, and I can't tell what the 3rd is.
