Just mind boggling to me how long his journey was to the bigs to show up as out of shape as he did. I will never understand him ******** all over his opportunity.
It really is hard to believe. He was in the middle of the order for a Championship contending team last season. Then shows up 20-30 lbs heavier. He was lucky to stick around as long as he did. Maybe he’ll go somewhere and be better. Same for AJ Reed. Gosh, There’s a lot of former Astros around the league having solid seasons offensively. Domingo Santana Ramon Laureano (Really wish we kept him) Teoscar Hernandez Colin Moran
Had to happen. I think he will get claimed, but he has so many deficiencies that it’s possible he won’t. I thought he could be a John Kruk type, but he just didn’t evolve. He has the potential to become a very good hitter, but he sure as hell didn’t show the discipline for it. Hard to figure.
If your job is to play professional baseball, then I don't know why you would allow yourself to get big like that? I'm left wondering if he didn't have some underlying thyroid issue that was contributing to weight gain. While it's no given being slimmer would help with his swing, it couldn't hurt. I'm rooting for him to be on another team. Maybe he just needs a fresh start? Is it possible he ends up back in our minor league system? None of us can really accuse him of not giving a full effort as we don't know what was going on behind the scenes. It does seem a little strange he put on a lot of weight since last season. I wonder if it factored into the Astros decision at all assuming he just let himself go. But, I'll bet not. It was just his production.
If there is an underlying issue you would think the Astros could have taken that opportunity to IL him to investigate and work on.
I guess if the organization had a problem with it...they would have had him work on it. It doesn't seem like an unreasonable ask for someone who is considered a pro athlete. On the flip side, it may not be that important a factor which is why nothing was done about it.
Isn’t that part of professional athletes? U produced, they pay u. U don’t, they cut u. The dude hasn’t produce since last August. What did she expect Astros to do? What did she expect us fans to do? Keep rooting for a guy they hasn’t produce for 5-6 months? No fans rooting against their team players to failed. If Kemp get designated next week (I hope not), it’s probably won’t be a popular move with the players or wives either. But that’s life. At least those players will get more opportunities to play and excel in a non-pressure situation like Giles.
