    He was a dirty coach that encouraged his players to be borderline psychopaths on the court, but I wouldn't wish dementia on anyone.

    Terrible disease. I have seen first-hand in my family what it does. Basketball completely aside, it is incredibly sad to see someone vanishing like this.

    JS and Nick Van Lier were an hellacious backcourt duo on some terrific Bulls teams that couldn't seem to win enough. Always 'hated' the SOB (and would have welcomed him to my team w/open arms).

    My grandparents have been affected by both of these diseases and his wife’s comments are essentially the way it feels.

    My grandma had dementia. It was the worst time of my life slowly losing somebody while they were still alive.

    dementia AND psrkinson's. jeez what worse way could there be? did he retire due to illness? I've always thought he could have easily coached for another 10 years. i understand now.

    Wow it seems like yesterday when he was just on the sidelines coaching the 90's Utah Jazz.
