It’s time to cut White loose. He is only on the team now because of the injuries and Diaz starts a rehab assignment tomorrow. Surely we can survive with Yuli at 1B, Breg 3B and Straw at SS until Diaz is back?
No..Straw is not a good enough multi game SS. If they have waited this long, they will wait another week.
Yes, but if we did hypothetically DFA White tomorrow, we could bring up Mayfield for a week until Diaz is activated.
Does Mayfield make us better or are we doing this just because we really hate White? We need 2 guys who are actually trained at 1B, you can't just throw anybody over. White has to stay until Diaz is back. Once that happens then absolutely, GTFO.
I've convinced myself at this point that Kemp will be sacrificed to keep White. Straw has made Kemp expendable. If you cut White and then something happens to Yuli, we would be majorly F'd at 1st (no disrespect to Diaz's 8 career games at 1B).
We shouldn't have to sacrifice anything to keep White. If we are, I question the plan. But I would sure consider Kemp + something in a trade for a serviceable 1B. We wouldn't get much more than a bag of Doritos for White in a trade.
C: Chirinos, Stassi 1B: Gurriel, Diaz 2B: Altuve, Diaz 3B: Bregman, Gurriel SS: Correa, Bregman, Straw LF: Brantley, Alvarez CF: Springer, Marisnick, Straw RF: Reddick, Springer, Straw DH: Alvarez, (Day of Rest) The only way White stays on this roster is at the expense of Straw, whom I think has a lot more to offer at this point. As another poster pointed out, we do have a weakness at 1B if both Gurriel and Diaz go down, but we would have the same problem at C, 3B and other spots.
Kemp's value to this team is non-existent. White at least offers depth to a shallow position. Once Diaz and Correa come back, Kemp is gone too.
We can get another 1B/DH like White. The downside to cutting him is purely that he could suddenly start hitting again. He's actually hitting the ball harder and with more line drives when compared to last year, but striking out more and obviously not hitting home runs. Kemp at least can run, but yeah, with a healthy Correa & Diaz, plus Straw, his playing time is hard to see.
Crazy what a month does to ones contact rate and confidence. Yuli is tearing the seams off the ball now.
Yep...and at the time I wrote that, I was 100% sure of it. Just glad he has turned it around. He was just much better than how he had been performing. He's somewhere between the Yuli Part I and the Yuli Part II, but a lot closer to the Yuli Part II. Although, it would be great if he continues to be Yuli Part II.
