Cut my teeth drinking at Nicks Place when I moved to Houston at age 19 (fake id in hand). Many crazy memories... I was broke and $5 all you can eat spaghetti ruled.

It's a great read, @justtxyank, and sounds like an amazing time. You were wondering what it was like before social media, smartphones and all that stuff, and getting together with fellow sports fans? I went to a lot of clubs to listen to live music, but to bars to hang out with friends and talk sports. I guess that's not too different. Loud rock and loud people! You pretty much had to be loud yourself. Pitchers of beer, air hockey, Foosball, arcade games of the '60's and '70's. Sitting at a table, checking out the girls, and talking about the Rockets, the Oilers, and the Astros. After that, we'd go to a friend's smoke filled house or apartment (sometimes my place) and continue on, preferably with a girl in tow.

I had the most fun talking sports at someone's place or my own. We were all fans of the Houston teams and we all had decent to very good sound equipment (mine was very good), and LP's of whatever had just come out playing in the background. Music seemed to go well with talking sports. OK, it went well with anything! There was a constant stream of great music coming out every week in the '60's and '70's. I had my own garage apartment or was renting a house with a friend or girlfriend, so we often ended up there. I can honestly say that I've managed to never live in an apartment complex. I'm allergic. ;-)

It was different. I guess in some ways it might seem primitive today, certainly the technology, but we didn't miss what didn't exist. The Houston teams were certainly different!

Not an oral history. More of a memoir.

That is Matt Thomas lecturing us as well. I think I caught him in the middle of "SEE! Now you [guys] will change your tune."
