I almost mentioned earlier that I was weirdly more excited about Misael Tamarez putting up a very similar line, because the Astros seem to do better with the random older signings at odd times in the year than they do with low bonus 16 year olds... And apparently Tamarez got promoted stateside after the game, because he's now on the GCL roster, and Rolian Machandy is on the DSL roster. This could be a procedural move, with Luis Guerrero moving to TC, the GCL had an open spot.
For the 2nd time in as many games, Luis Santana is involved in a late lineup switch, this time he ends up starting in place of Arias who was originally slated to start.
Uh, apparently Edgardo Sandoval, who made an appearance in Fayetteville and the retired, is back with Tri-City. Just passing this along
Reddick is a career 782 OPS vs RHP Yuli a career 760 OPS vs LHP What makes you think next year they could platoon and put up an 860 OPS figure combined?
Each player may improve his split if allowed to focus solely on it. But you’re probably right. The main reason to platoon Reddick and Gurriel is to get Tucker in the everyday lineup without having to waste prospects and money dumping Reddick when he is still a useful player.
Scott Manea was the only player in the system to homer last night. Manea now has six home runs on the season.
Deason, the Astros' 5th-round pick last year out of Arizona, will make his first Carolina League start tonight.
I wonder why Deury Carrasco isn't playing. It's been almost 2 weeks since he made a start, but he hasn't been placed on the IL...
Lots of sporadic playing time in short season. Matthew Barefoot hasn’t played much either. Mascai and Cortabarria haven’t played much in the GCL.
Jaime Melendez, a Mexican lefty who signed in April, allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out five over four scoreless innings today in the Dominican. Jesús Liranzo hit his third home run of the season.
I would say he's avg to above avg at 1st/3rd. He's probably one of the most clutch hitters on the team and that doesn't really show up in the WAR. I'm hoping that his hand is finally healthy and the power surge lately isn't an aberration. Have you noticed he almost set a career high for taking walks in the first half of this season?
Tyler Ivey walked one and struck out three over two scoreless innings in his second rehab start in the GCL.
Barefoot is dealing with an injury: I'm kinda assuming Mascai had an injury, because he's played in every game since the first game he played (except today, but there's still time for him to get in) and Cortabaria was like the worst hitter in the DSL Astros OF last year, and now they Barber, Giron, and the just-promoted Guerero. It's possible, even probable, that it's an injury for Carrasco, but it just caught my eye that they're playing late round picks in the middle infield over one of the higher ceiling prospects in the system. Juan Ramirez (PTBNL in the JV trade) has been actived on the GCL roster today, so he still exists.
From Kiley McDaniel’s Fangraphs chat: Me: I saw the Astros signed James Nix who was on the draft BOARD, what can you tell us about him? 12:45 Kiley McDaniel: big kid, big tools, like a DJ Peters type with long levers, needs to prove he can make contact in pro ball before we get excited
Great to see him back. He was the only pitching prospect with dominant numbers before his injury, and IMO on his way to serious call up consideration from AA (ie McCullers) given the state of our rotation.
Beer hit his 11th HR, off a lefty. His splits until then were .333/1.002 vs righties, .226/.660 vs lefties.
