I didn't really think Yao's last game was a big deal. Come on, he scored against the hawks in 3OT. Well, until I realized that his 53 eff. rating ties the best record of this season. And also this bit from ESPN's Mark Stein.
first... what most here are so excited about is not particularly his numbers....but the way he got them Stein touched on it....but I can tell he didnt watch the game at all. if he is waiting for Yao to get agressive...he dont missed it..it happened toward the end of regualtion last night when Yao finally decided he can take double teams..and scrambled after fumbled balls to put it back up and in. These are things he hasnt really done that much this year....(with the double team attack..not at all) go watch some of the clips from the game....see how he was doing in those clips...it was mighty fine. Im praying that he does the same thing tomorrow...but Im afraid the minutes in 3OT may affect him. lets hope not.
In his 2nd year, no doubt im surprised, duncan, robinson nor ewing are on that list. maybe ewing and drob are before 86?
No way man, there has to be other players since 86' that have done that too. Bird? Magic? Jordan? I'm sure they've done that sometime in the prime of their careers.
I just found the box score. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/scores101/101005/101005338.htm The guy shot 47 times. How long until Yao Ming gets that many touches! (Of course... he did have 10 offensive rebounds.) He also didn't score in OT when the Kings lost.
That 5 assists can be very tricky. Come to think of it, usually you don't pass ball that much when you are hot enough to get 40+ points.
ROFL. That's what I been saying. All these "so-called" great players like Duncan and Garnett need 20 shots to get 20 points a game, and the media and the NBA treat them like gods. I must give credit to Shaq and Yao for only needing 10 shots a game to get their 20....and don't anybody dare bring up the free throws because Duncan and Garnett get more than their fair share of free throws. You can't breath on a MVP candidate without getting called a foul.
did you just say duncan and kg are "so-called" great players? last year's mvp and this year's mvp? geez.
maybe i misread something but going back through hakeem's game logs he had an amazing 46 point, 19 rebound, 8 assist game (with 6 to's, 3 stls, and 3 blks, talk about filling up a stat sheet) in 95-96 so there was at least one before the 5 he mentioned. though he did say 5th player so i guess possibly hakeem doing it twice doesn't count as another player (though that's usually not how stats like that are referred to). still seems like someone had to do it since 86-87 and the fact his last 5 are from 96-97 makes a typo more likely. hakeem also had something like six or seven 40 point, 5 assist games in which he ended up 2 or 3 rebounds short and i think one or two 40 point, 15 rebound games in which he ended up a few assists short. but from 91-92 through 95-96, that 46/19/8 game was the only time he got 40+/15+/5+. damn hakeem was good. and damn i didn't realized how good that game that yao just played was, even with 3 OT's.
Thats true. Even though I think this 40/15/5 thing isn't true, Yao still had an amazing game, considering he only took 21 shots for 41 points. Unbelieveable.
i would think that yao's shots will increase over the next few years. and hopefully his fg% wont dive down like francis' has lately and yao's numbers will be awesome. does anyone think now at this point in his 2nd season from what you have seen that Yao has a few MVP years in him?
Can you imagine Yao taking 47 shots? He wouldn't take them unless he was making a good percentage, so...I'll give him 55% shooting for 52 points plus say 20 points at the line - sounds like 72 points. Of course, if he shot at 71% like in this game, that would be 67 points made plus 20 free throws made for 87 points.
