I criticize Steve too, but it's the arguments that have been used in this thread. His assists are down, which doesn't mean he's not distributing the ball less. I don't say that Steve is either the problem or the solution, but probably/possibly just a part of both. And it's the fact that people aren't even in their criticism/praise. That's why I say it's knee jerk reaction.

Hopefully that clears up a misunderstanding. I don't think Steve's flawless, and he deserves a huge part of the blame. I won't deny that, but to say that somebody is seriously DOUBTING Steve's ability after this loss, is a reaction. Where the people when we were winniing, Steve was shooting well, and our offense was running relatively smoothly. There were some posts of people admitting that Steve was doing ok, but there weren't any threads saying, 'Steve is seriously the best pg we could have for the team' or anything like that.

Honestly I wouldn't there to be threads like that, because they would be knee jerk reactions in the opposite way.

I'm all about accountability. Steve and Cat deserve their fare share of the blame, but where Jackson didn't get back on at least two Mav fast breaks that I remember off the top of my head, Yao was having some foul difficulties, and the whole team didn't do what was needed to break the zone defense they through at us. The whole team didn't pick up the Mav offense far enough out on the floor, which gave them the opportunity for all those good looks at the basket.

There is no way anyone would deliberately play that bad. Its not good for his career and he gains nothing from it.

The fact that your analysis is so deficient is the funny part. The fact that you agreed with Yetti's asinine suggestions that Francis is deliberately throwing the game speaks volumes.

I don't think Steve is throwing games. He's shooting just as well as similar dribble drive point guards like Baron Davis and Gilbert Arenas. The NBA has changed.

Yes he is not scoring like the way he use to, but how can you say he is not being more of a team player. The problem is that he is looking too hard to get his teamates involved. You can see him struggle on deciding whether to pass or shoot, which usually ends up with a bad shot or a bad pass.

The truth is that he is trying to play the way JVG (and all of us) want him to play, pass first-shoot second. But thats not the way he is use to playing and its not the way to bring out the best in him.

Although most of ya'll will disagree, I think JVG needs to tell SF to look for his shot more. Too many times is Steve undecisive and picks up his dribble. Too many times has Steve passed up a perfectly good layup for a pass. The fact is that Yao, Cat, JJ and the rest of the team is only as good as Steve makes them. It just seems that Steve is trying too hard to make others happy (JVG, the critics, the city of Houston), and that he is totally abandoning the things that got him that "superstar" status.

Steve was playing well the last couple games (except lastnight) and it really reflected on the rest of the team. Steve has the ability to create shots for others (driving in and passing it out) and he obviously has the ability to create his own shot, but who's creating shots for Steve?

Two and a half words for Steve Franchise's inconsistant play this season, Jeff Van Gundy. His stupid offense is taking steve completly out of his game. Steve is not a spot up shooter, he has to drive to score but when you have Cato and Yao clogging the paint there is just no room for him to penetrate. When steve does create a shot for his teammates they miss the shot or fumble it out of bounds like Yao does 90% of the time. When steve gives the ball up early in the shot clock he never gets it back cause Cat, JJ, and Taylor hog the ball and once they get it everyone knows they are going to put up the shot. Steve needs to take 20-25 for this team to win consistently, he if forced to defer his offensive game so Yao can get pushed around in the olw post and be forced to take a FADE AWAY from 15 feet. A 7'6 player should never be forced to fade away. Van Gundy needs to run some more high post offense where he has Yao on the perimeter where can be more effective and have the lanes open. Steve is the best player on this team just casue Yao has had 2 good games all year, everyone wants him to be the focal point in the offense. Yao has had many more terrible games this season than good games. You people claim that steve doesn't get him the ball, well if Yao established descent position in the post and seal his man then it would be easier to get him the ball. You people want steve to push the ball and still get Yao the ball, well on every offensive possesion Yao is the last man doen the court. If Van gundy focused the offense for Steve half as much as he does for Yao, steve would be averaging 35pts a game. Steve is still the best player on this team and they proved it when Yao lost to the Suns by 35pts.

In effect, you want a team modeled like the Hornets/Sixers/Knicks/Wizards with a combo guard playing point and being the focal point. Do you notice those teams are bad teams and are in the Eastern Conference?

The problem with Rockets fans (myself inluded) is that after a win we're on top of the world and after a loss, the sky is falling. It's a lonnnnngggg season. If you stress or overjoy after all the ups and downs, you'll end up looking like Smeagles, I mean Jeff Van Gundy. Chill out alittle, the Rockets are headed in the right direction, we were spanking the mavs early on and hung in there despite foul trouble by Yao and a bad shooting night from Stevie. This team is going to be fine. Peace.

What I want to see the Rockets do is get Steve involved in the offense. Van Gundy has eliminated Steve as an opiton from this team and the only shots steve is getting are the ones he has to create on his own off the dribble. Van gundy has a ton of plays to free JJ and Cat but none for steve. Even when M.Jackson is on the floor most of the plays are for MO. The other teams are not even respecting Steve and his offensive game anymore casue they know Van Gundy has him handcuffed. The Rockets can't beat the Mavs because they play a zone and the van gundy stills wants them to force it down low in the heart of the zone to Yao. In the past the francis offense used to beat the Mavs but Van gundy is reluctant to let Steve play and until he does the Rockets will struggle to win consistantly.

Francis does not fit, he is like Water to Yao Ming's Oil.

    They don't mix.

As long as there are zones in the NBA...Francis will falter.

I would trade him while his value is high this summer.

Give the team to Yao....it is time.

While I agree with the give the team to Yao part, I also agree with the poster who said you are sounding like a broken record. Give it a rest, DaDa.

    OK.

Did you see Steve dribble out the clock in the loss to the Spurs?

I mean that was as a pathetic display of Basketball as I have seen in a while. He looked like a rookie out there. He seems to have not learned one thing in 5 years. Van Gundy walked off the floor in absolute disgust and I dont blame him. Steve said he was looking ot pass the ball... he shold be embarrassed of himself. He let the team down that game.

Look im not saying he is a bad basketball player, but that he is not point guard, a leader, or a superstar. He is simply a great player. Until he shows me otherwise I have no evidence or reason to think differently.

Let me get this straight as well. I am not bashing Steve because we lost a game. Do not stereotype my opnion based on many thoughtless posters on this board. I have been watching Steve since day one. I remember his first basket as a pro... a baseline dunk vs. the Miluakee Bucks and Sam Cassel. His preformance so far this year has not been what I expected. He is not special like Yao Ming (the real Franchise player). His Basketball IQ or capacity to learn does not seem very high.

If the game comes down to a final shot I want the ball in Yao's hands. I am impressed with Stevie's 3 point shot to send the Atlanta game to the 3rd overtime, but his point guard play is the reason the team struggles with teams like the Hawks in the first place.

If you think Yao has had only 2 good games all year then by your 'rationale' Steve hasn't had a good one yet.

I saw that Spurs game. Steve could've passed earlier, but that would have mean that if we wanted to take that last 3 pointer to tie it there would have been time left. Maybe something else would have developed. However when it came time to take that shot, nobody was open that Steve could pass too. JVG called the problem on that play.

Last night STeve rarely took the shot at the end of quarters. He passed, and when he did take the shot he made it at clutch time.

Steve's pg play last night was not the reason we took 3 OT's to beat them. That's ridiculous. Steve dished out 9assists, was skying for key rebounds, and tying the Hawks up for jump balls. Steve grabbed steals when we needed steals. He was playing with fire. Steve only had 2 TO's. The rotations on defense was our main culprit last night. Cato once didn't even pretend to make the rotation to the perimeter. On another play Yao couldn't even get around the other Hawk to make the rotation. That combined with the fact that Yao, and Steve don't defend the Pick and Roll properly are the reason we took 3 OT's to win the game.

    Somehow it's Steve's fault it took us 3 OT's.

Well if the offense was being run for steve like it is for Yao then steve would be an MVP canidate and would have had many more " good games". The fact of the matter is that steve should not have to defer his offensive game for Yao, the player that should have been giving up his shot is Cat and not Steve. Francis was the reason they won the triple OT game against the Hawks. Although he was not hitting his shot he got some huge offensive rebounds, hit the biggest shot of the game, and dished out the most important assist of the game, all while guarding the best player on the Hawks. Steve is the only one willing to sacrifise it all to win and it pisses me off to have idiot fans getting on his case for a few bad games.
