Did y'all notice the picture on the front of The Chronicle's sports section: Yao and Steve enthusiastically embracing, the crowd in the background exalting, and there, off to the side, is Jeff Van Gundy, looking as grumpy as ever. It's clear that he is still most unsatisfied with his team's performance. I thought it was a very telling picture.

how happy do you want him to be after BARELY surviving with a win (if you can call it that) versus the worst team in the league (IMO, now that reef/sheed/theo/everybody.else is gone).

i mean, it was the hawks, right? not the lakers.

My point exactly! I'll bet some of his grumpiness is a result of his team being so thrilled to beat one of the worst teams in the league.

The question is, is it better if you're the coach to use negative reenforcement in a situation like this or ride the high and count on your players to learn the obvious. I'd go for the latter but then again I'm far more easygoing than Gundy.

ok...i get what you're sayin. i thought you were taking the other stance. yeah, good point. i mean, emotions get the hold of you whenever you're in a tight game...but it's good that JVG is more focussed on somethin bigger.

I think in a situation like this you have to be negative. I mean its the freakin hawks for god sake.

Knowing Van Gundy, I'm sure the guy wouldn't even be smiling if they won the championship...

Van Gundy is such a miserable complainer, he never smiles. I swear he is lurking somewhere on the Clutch BBS starting 'trade steve' threads.

the hawks played outrageously....they played with major heart, b ut in the end so did the Rox...you have to respect them for gutting up in 3ots after playing the night before and not giving in..they really mentally could have....I thought they shouldbe proud of their mential toughness last night.

now, as far as overall play and game mental skills....they failed miserabely....it was the hawks and no matter what theythrew at us we should have punked them in regulation....

when will this team learn to beat the zone? it is really ridiculous watching 2-3 guys lean on Ming before he gets the ball and we cannot find an open shot or play to make more points ont he board.....

They did not follow the game play at all..you could see them laboring....this is why grumpy troll was not smiling...though he never does.....

The is the Rockets Paradigm last night:

    Great mental toughness to win
    Horrible execution and game smarts

I knew it was going to be a long night when the Hawks scored, what, 31pts in the 1st quarter.

They shot the ball extremely well, and got a few lucky prayers here and there. Our defense probably could have done better, and our offense seemed ok for the most part.
We let Atlanta score too much. We played back to back, so maybe that had an influence.
Our guys played major minutes in two days, even Yao, and they deserved to win, at home no less.

Don't look now, but the Rockets are now a game and a half behind the Grizzlies. We're in 7th place in the West.

Good thing we're not playing a tough team tomorrow..

    ...uh, wait
