If anyone is interested, Kermit Washington will be interviewed on tonight's edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumble on HBO (I believe at 9:00 CDT). Washington discusses the trouble he has had getting an NBA job since the punch. I suspect they will talk about it and probably show the old footage. ------------------
Its a shame. Kermit Washington should have been given work in the NBA-as the official urinal cleaner-the jackass ------------------ "I may be mistaken, but I'm never wrong" -Barkley

If Rudy doesn't draft Richard Jefferson at #13, should someone call Kermit to smack some sense into him? ------------------ Don't look at the feet
Kermit Washington is actualy a good guy and has paid for what he did more than anyone human being should. He had an interview here in the Bay Area with Tom Tolbert and the man has paid his dues. No one wanted to touch him after that incident. He was blacklisted from the league and the college game. He to this day feels the ramifications for what he did and thats not right. ------------------ ``We need to FOCASS".... Akeem Olajuwon
I'm glad somebody is taking up for Washington. It seems like his punishment has exceeded his crime. If I remember correctly, didn't he sense Rudy running up behind him and mistakenly think that Rudy was coming after him, turn and blast away? My recollection is that it was an honest mistake made in the heat of battle. Spree's calculated targeting of his coach while not as bloody was more criminal and destructive by its intent. If Kermit was allowed to continue playing in the NBA, would he really be blacklisted from coaching OR is he just not coaching material? Same for college. All in all, it seems like he should be remembered for something other than this fleeting moment of infamy. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. I was not living in Texas nor was I a Rockets fan at the time, but I am old enough to remember that play when it was late breaking news and have always felt deeply for Rudy T. If this were a playground instead of the NBA, Washington's act was a felonious assault and further subject to a civil court for damages and lost wages. If I went to get a job and had a felonious assault conviction on my record, I have no doubt it would impact the view of the potential employer. Further, I am not aware that Rudy T received any settlement for personal injury, lost work time, or a shortened career. In the real world, Kermit Washington would have had to overcome these obstacles to progress financially. Wink3 - You don't appear to ever have been "sucker punched" (I have) or you would realize how distasteful your comment is. If Rudy T ever logged on here, would you want him to read that statement? ------------------ GATER
I may have been a bit hard on Kermit but, you must be responsible for your actions. He did a pretty rotten thing. Yes, it may have been in the heat of the moment but lots of jail cells are filled with people who did bad things to others in the heat of the moment. Although he might not have comprehended fully what he did-Rudys face paid the price. I just hated to see that happen to Rudy T. and am still a bit sour. ------------------ "I may be mistaken, but I'm never wrong" -Barkley
If you were in a fight, and the other guy's friend is running at you full speed, would you assume: (1) He's coming to break it up or (2) He's coming to help the other guy I would probably assume #2, and I wouldn't just wait for him to hit me before defending myself. ------------------ http://www.swirve.com ... more fun than a barrel full of monkeys and midgets.
That has got to be among the stupidest statements ever made on this board. And Lord knows there have been some stupid statements made on this board. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now. [This message has been edited by Dr of Dunk (edited May 15, 2001).]
I think shanna agrees with you ric, as do I. If it hadn't have been Rudy, we'd all probably be a little more forgiving. I think he's definitely paid his dues. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin
this is taking the incident completely out of context. if you were fortunate enough to see the piece, the nba of that era was a different beast from today's version. punches flew at a rate that would make the nhl blush. in the heat of the moment, his punch was understandable (notice i did not say justifiable). unfortunately, for all involved, said punch just happened to be an absolutely "perfect" shot, a gruesome combination of his force hitting rudy's force square across the bridge of the nose. (the piece must have showed the footage six, seven times, and i must admit, i had to avert my eyes after the second viewing -- it is truly horrofic looking.) i won't defend washington -- i was sickened by his choice to play the race card. but he has owned up to his actions, and, i dare say, has been every bit as damagd by it, not physically, but emotionally, as rudy has. it was a great piece, very fair, and quite enlightening. ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
Rudy settled out of court with the Lakers for about $1 million. I also belive that Washington has paid his dues. It was a horrific mistake of judgement, not an intentional nor deliberate act of violence. He thought Rudy was coming to join in the fight, and he swung first. I'm ashamed to say that I've done the same thing. It's a well known rule of fighting: If you're in a battle with someone bigger or stronger than you, you better land that first punch squarely on the nose. Extremely unfortunate incident, but society has let murderers off with less punishment than Washington has endured (see Simpson, O.J.). ------------------ I always thought "With my talent, it's only a matter of time before I'm discovered".
