Basically you should be asking 'what are the odds that for one season yao will be the best player in basketball?' as historically the best player has always won. Kevin Garnett seems to just now be taking it to that Hall of Fame level and Tim Duncan isn't going anywhere. I think his recent surge has shown that he's capable but I just don't know if he's agressive enough or athletic enough to raise his game to a Hakeem level.

Cd and Jvg do need to build a better team around yao. Yao cant just do it himself, KG tryed it himeslf for 7 straight years and it didnt work.

But Hakeem was a finesse Player. Give Yao Ming a chance, be sure to observe him in the Games where he is utilized by the Guards. The Hakeem Rockets were built arround him. Yao Ming had to fit into a Team build arround Steve Francis, so we should remember that Yao Ming hadsn't been in the Rockets leadership role yet.Give him time !

I agree it would be a privilege to be as good as Hakeem.

Anyway, they have totally different games. Yeah, the future doesn't look too bright for the Rockets even if Yao & Steve mesh and play consistently, and all the Rockets buy into the Van Gubdy system I'd be surprised if they get one in the next 8 years. The competition is just that good. Even if Shaq retires, KG, Webber, and Duncan are just hitting their prime and then theirs Gasol, Amare Stoudemire, and Nowitski!!

I just can't see Yao outplaying Duncan or KG, the rest he probably could.

Hopefully, the NBA restructures the playoff format.

    You need other options:

    Many, but with another team........

Many, after the team is blown up..........

Many, after the Mavs team is stricken with the plague.........

    Better yet.........

Many, after the Mavs and Spurs team flights collide in mid air........

gawd, i hate that you say that, but... i thought about it during the rox/mavs game tonight... about yao being on a team like sac that can pass.

did you notice those two passes that yao threw to clarence late in the fourth quarter? i think one was a three point play and the other c'dub was fouled. schit, man... if brad miller can mesh with other good passers on sac's team, can you imagine what yao would do if he had great passers on his team? game over.

No kidding. I think we have the worst passers in the nba; well, except maybe Washington. Good luck getting 20 shots from Arenas, Jackhouse. Poor Yao. He must feel he never left the Chinese team.

This team as currently constructed will never win a championship due to the inability to maximize the inside-out offense which needs dead-eye shooters. This is not an Eastern Conference point guard dominated style team like Baron Davis and the Hornets. Rockets need someone like Brent Barry and Ray Allen. Those two guys would launch the Rockets up to the 4 seed just in a season. Who in the heck can double Yao with Brent Barry and Ray Allen on the perimeter?
