"Rocket Center Hakeem Olajuwon is in the midst of a Muslim fast known as Ramadan. Although he is forbidden to eat OR drink from sun up to sun down, Olajuwon plays 43 minutes in a losing cause to the Knicks, rinsing his mouth out at halftime. He scores 27 points and joins 20 other players as he passes the 10,000 rebound barrier, on February 19, 1995." Chris Berman

Just thought you all might like a little nostalgia. :)

wasn't that glyde's first start. i believe they were in charlotte the day or two before and drexler got his physical results at halftime. it was an amazin gsecond half for the rockets. we did lose in new york but we won the title nice. i remember it perfectly because i was in n.c thank god to see the hornets game on tv and the new york game was televised. correct me if i'm wrong but was it glyde's first start

well we aquired Clyde on Feb 14th so he should have been on the bench on the 15th.. I dont know if he started or not since it was only 1 day, but he should have at least been on the bench

It was glide's first start... and the N.Y. game was on NBC.

But, alas... we lost, despite Hakeem's heroic efforts.

I'd be interested to see his career stats in the months he fasted for Ramadan. He always seemed to somehow keep the energy level at an unbelievable rate.

I also remember the Bulls game in 1997 (Barkley's first year), where Hakeem went for 30+ on national TV, and they beat Jordan... and he couldn't have a glass of water the entire game (it was in the day) because of Ramadan.

Barkley (who didn't play b/c of an injury) was in AWE of the man.

I remember that game very well too Nick. It wasn't just Barkley that was in awe it was also the commentators and spectators as well.

Olajuwon... what a respectful and classy player on and off the court. So was Clyde. Now Yao... not a bad track record.

I don't have any old tapes of past Rockets games, so I don't get to see Olajuwon's play anymore. I almost forget just how awe inspiring he was. He really could leave you thinking, "How did he just do that?" To do some of these things while fasting is even more impressive. He was truly unique.

Rockets vs Bulls, Sunday, January, 19, 1997, Dream was fasting and scored 32 points, pulled down 16 rebounds, blocked 5 shots, picked 4 pockets, and dished out 4 assists! How Sweet it is, Rockets win 102 - 86

    Incredible numbers!

The most amazing thing about Hakeem was that he would get the ball, and everyone in the ****ing stadium knew what he was going to do (dream shake), and he still did it, and it still worked -- every time. Incredible...
