A player's expected value changes in the minors. Appel's value never went up. Reed's did. I choose Reed due to proximity to majors and not being a pitcher, but that pick's value was pretty costly. You are probably right that Appel is a bigger bust as opportunity cost with the pick was huge.

Man...I thought Alvarez would have been us this weekend. Tyler White has 123 AB's. We see what we are gonna see from him. Call up Tucker or Alvarez and see what they can do. I guess the problem is Alvarez is in a bit of a slump now. 3 for his last 20. Maybe that's why he is delayed. Tucker however has been on a tear... went 4 for 7 last night. 20 HR's for the season. Need to find out if he is a AAA player or MLB.
White had quite a few AB before this season which should factor in to any evaluation of him. It doesn’t impact your point dramatically except he is likely more of a league average bat (.240/.320/.420) than a terrible bat (.220/.310./290). But either way Alvarez and Tucker both profile to be quite a bit better both offensively and defensively.
I think they have the luxury of making absolutely sure that Tyler can't be/isn't closer to what we saw last August and they're taking advantage. Tucker got called up on July 7 last year, I think somewhere around then is what we'll see with Yordan.
I thought it was a mistake last year to wait that long. Knowledge is power. 3 weeks is not long enough to evaluate a player before trade deadline to see if this is a guy we want on playoff rosters.
In regards to White this year...it doesn't look like he is generating enough power with his back leg. This was his swing last year. Maybe it's just me. Also he didn't carry as many doughnuts in his fanny pack as he does this year. Not sure why he keeps wanting to wear it.
