Honestly don't know what to think about this. On the one hand, three years is a short period of time to endure "unbearable" pain and choose to end one's life. With some encouragement and support perhaps she might have pulled out of her depression at some point in the future. On the other hand, people should have freedom to choose such an action. In which case is a 17-year old still too young to exercise that autonomy? wondering what people think.

Sad all the way around. I'm not going to waist my brain power on it, since this situation is very rare. Much rarer than toddlers killing themselves with their parent's guns.

There has to be a point in a country's progression where it is correct to say, "We're good now, let's stop here."

I think if she wanted to kill herself she would have. Hard to make the case 18 is better than 17. Adulthood started for her as soon as she was violated.

Let us know if you'll form an opinion. I'm very curious to see your philosophical treatise on the matter. (Doesn't have to be a treatise). It's always interesting to see OT form conclusive opinions that don't include mentions of 'bumsauce'

ps. how is 3 years of "unbearable" pain considered "short" in your world? There are masochists among us, I hear - are you one of them? Hope I'm not taking things too literally in your post.

you realize someone could genuinely be up in the air on a question such as suicide and not have a definitive opinion one way or another. I don't understand what it is sometimes with people on this forum. Why the nastiness and why the disagreeable tone?

Feinberg's vol 3 is the classic work on paternalism and associated questions about things like suicide. If you don't care to look it up, skim it/read it, fine. But at least my views such as they are tend to be informed. These are difficult questions not amenable to easy answers.

that's fine. I'm genuinely torn on the suicide question. There are plenty of cases where young people contemplate suicide, and prevented from acting on that impulse, and years later report how glad they are that they didn't go through with it at the height of their despair. Some folks who have commented on the suicidal state of mind (not that there's a single state of mind) liken it to that of a child who does not yet fully possess a mature and fully developed set of adult faculties--and this similarity provides an analogous rationale for acting paternalistically to intervene and prevent the suicide from taking place.

The fact that a society or state such as the Netherlands would give its approval and/or tacit blessing to an act of suicide in these circumstances (mental anguish versus incurable and painful cancer, say) is troubling.

anyway. I'm not ducking the "do you have an opinion" question. I really think this is a hard case.

Boredom and trollish defensivenss? Oh well, it's the internet.

Anyways, catastrophic stimulii at an early age usually end up with life changing consequences. Some sex abuse victims end up changing their sexuality and sticking with it. Others might not have a broad range of emotions anymore. If Europe decided their people had a right to happiness, what happens when it's taken away?

I can't say if we have a right to decide on these matters, but if I don't have a right over my own life, then I sure as hell won't accept the government's decision over it.

If I was born elsewhere where overpopulation was a problem, I'd probably have different ideas.

Hate saying it's all relative but I don't feel like spending a lot of thought on this topic right now....

I’ve been in some dark places but never really suicidal...I can’t imagine. Just a guess, that trauma probably fills every waking moment and is too much to project over another 60+ years. Rape is the most depraved **** ever and it’s so common. Just a sad situation all the way around. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger but not everyone makes it to the second group...

Like the way I feel about most things...that’s her choice? Then it’s her choice. Who am I to decide what’s best for (you)?

We need to have discussions about whether a newborn child should receive medical care — as it lays dying.

I am 100% against this. It's one thing for someone to seek to be euthanize with an incurable debilitating disease, it's another for a 17 year old girl to do the same when there is no clear consensus her depression is not incurable.

My best friend tried to commit suicide - he was upset he was stopped. Today he is very successful and has three kids he loves. If he was allowed to euthanize himself, he'd have missed out.

As much pain as someone is in emotionally, death is final, and it's our job as parents, friends, and a medical system to save lives so long as there is a realistic chance of healing.

My only counterpoint is that we know the brain is actively wiring itself until age 23 on average, so the sky is the limit for recovery and healing after age 17. Easy for me to say, of course, but I agree w @Os Trigonum -- no easy answers here. :-(

I will relay though that a very evil, overstated government once used euthanasia as a springboard to more horrible "policies."

They didn’t just allow it. They didn’t assist. They tried to get her help. Didn’t work. They stopped force feeding her. That’s what it would have taken to keep her alive. To hospitalize her and force food and water into her. Perhaps put her into a coma, so that her body remains alive. Technically, this is more killing self without active assistance and thus is passive act of euthanize or isn’t one at all. Whatever the label, this is a case that show me the decision should not be that allowing killing of self NOT be allowed by the state. It’s already an extreme difficult situation. Let’s not make it easy through the state or make it impossible.

The Netherlands seem to have strike a good balance with their law.

Are you referring to the Nazi regime? Kinda apples to oranges man. Or like...apples to a moon. 6 years was apparently enough, you're asking for 6 more before recovery can BEGIN and then to what end? And how a traumatized brain can finish it's wiring?

Being force-fed to live... means you don't even control your life. On top of everything else she's gone through, to have been force-fed...seems like an easy answer for the only one who's answer should matter. I can't imagine being her parent, friend, etc. either. That's rough.

Moral of the story is don't rape people.
