Have the courtesy to get in shape if you're going to go to court and make such a spectacle out of it youngster. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1738853
He wasn't that impressively physically anyway. I'm curious to see if he runs the 40 because his time will be pretty bad.
Nope he ain't touching it with a 10 foot pole Anyway, what's most annoying about him being out of shape is not that he can't get back into shape ever, it's that he is out of shape at a time like now. He took the legal position that the NFL's draft rules were a violation of antitrust laws and damaged him by denying him his right to work in his chosen trade. So he took it to court, caused the NFL to expend millions in legal fees, and disrupted the structure of the NFL draft which could lead to the college basketballization of NCAA football and degrade the quality of play in the NFL and the NCAA. In spite of all this, he felt that his right to work now and not later was more important than that. Fair enough. So he goes through all of this, is granted his job interview, essentially, and gets to go to the combine. So what happens? Instead of taking it seriously, he shows up fat and out of shape; in other words, unprepared to interview and unprepared to work. That reflects extremely badly on him. What the hell has he been doing the last few months? I don't think he's been worrying too much about getting his degree. I know he is just a college kid trying to have a good time, but the reason why he went to court was that he wasn't just a kid, he should be treated like an adult. Well and good, but it's time to start acting like one then.
Relax everyone- Noone from OSU that is worth a decent draft pick ever works out at the combine. Like most major schools OSU has it's own showcase day where most of teh guys work out for teh teams. Whether it is fact or not is questionable but most of the guys swear they are better off workign out in their natural surroundings rather than at the NFL combine. Maurice will be fine, and I'm willing to bet 50% of the guys there (at teh combine) are not within 5 pounds of their ideal playing weight when the season ended. So it is disappointing he's not in perfect shape, but not many are (although some of the guys who have hired personal trainers, strength/speed coaches are probably in better shape now than they were when they played)
I don't see the big deal. He could easily lose 7 pounds in the course of a week with an INTENSE workout schedule (not counting loss of water weight). I mean come on. I've been addicted to cookie cakes for the past 2 weeks for some wack ass reason. I've gained about 9 pounds. I can lose that easily in the course of the next two weeks, by resuming my normal diet and upping my workout regime. I'm not as concerned about his physical status, but the attitude he displays. I love Tom Donahoe's quote on SC this morning, when someone tried to compare McGahee to Clarett.
Well, it's clear your work habits are abysmal. Addiction to cookie cakes = 6th round fodder. Way to go... You've just ruined your draft status. (How's your 40 time?)
That surprises me. If I were the athletic director at Ohio State, I'd politely tell Clarett to conduct his workout somewhere else. And to try eating a carrot, fat ass.
I'm not sure how he'll do, but if your going to be the test case, shouldn't you be prepared...I'm not really concerned about 7 lbs, but he should be...
To make it like the real NFL you should lower your shoulder and run through the line of waiting people, then get timed for the 40! That would turn some heads
The big deal is that he was already a bit chunky to begin with. So to show up chunkier than usual and then decide you aren't even going to workout after having gone to court and not even have played college ball for over a year (meaning he had time to get in shape) is considered a bit arrogant and disrepsectful. After all the noise he has made, he really should have showed up in peak condition and worked out.
Hence the reason I said I was more concerened about his attitude, not his physical status. Anyone can put on or lose weight. But his attitude towards the Combine is what raised a flag for me.
Yea, I was a little incredulous at Clarett's dismissal about running a 40 and being in shape. I know if I was him and I knew people were doubting my ability and talent, I would be busting my ass to shut the critics up. However, all he has done is opened the door even wider for them to hammer him - not very bright, maybe if he had stayed in school, he would have known better.
