I was installing a program last night and i kept getting the BSOD(blue screen of death) with a message something like unable to write disk, files maybe be lost So anyways, i scandisk (2 thorough and 2 standards) and i all 4 times they didn't find any bad sectors. I run defrag and it says something like errors on disk, need to run scandisk first, so i scandisk again and then defrag. I just reinstalled everything on my computer after reformatting the computer. Well finally the defrag finally worked. just wondering what does this mean, how can i fix it, or can it be fixed?
Bad harddrive? You might want to download disk checking utilities from your harddrive manufacturer's website. Sometimes they'll provide a better assessment of the health of your harddrive than scandisk.
What version of Windows are you running? If it's a newer version you can tell from your system hardware manager. If it's older you'll have to interupt the boot sequence before it starts Windows.
i also ran a maxtor hard drive diagnostic and gives me the code wd-s57 and also told me that my hard drive didn't pass the SMART test whatever that means. Any help guys?
S.M.A.R.T. = Self Monitoring And Reporting Technology It basically means your hard drive is telling you it is knackered, and will need replacing.
yep...drive is cratering. Office Depot has a nice 120G drive for $80-something after rebate.. time to go get a new one.
and when you get the new hard drive, please don't re-install ME... find XP or WIN2K, you'll be much happier.
absolutely correct...WinME was possibly the worst mistake in a long line of mistakes that MS has ever done. Believe it or not, you can still get Win2K out there..it is just fine if you dont run alot of games or multimedia....if you do...go with XP. I love Win2k...stable as hell...I havent had to reboot my WIn2k server in months.
