Let me be clear that I'm not posting this because I think Tyrone Willingham is getting unfair scrutiny because of his skin color. I just think that the Notre Dame Alumni are delusional if they think they're program is ever going to be where it once was.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- More than 400 Notre Dame alumni signed a letter to the school saying the football program needs to make significant progress next season or "a coaching change will become necessary."

The letter is dated Jan. 26 and was sent to Notre Dame's board of trustees.

"We have 100,000 alumni and we hear from any number of them on any number of topics. We take virtually all of them seriously," Notre Dame spokesman Matt Storin said Monday. "Whether the board of trustees will respond, I can't say, but it is doubtful they would debate these matters in the media."

The letter is critical of the football program, saying Notre Dame has made several poor coaching hires and placed more importance on making money than winning games.

It also asked that someone from outside the university be appointed to the vacant position of executive vice president and concentrate on finances, administration and athletics. The Rev. Edward Malloy, university president, has been handling those duties since 2002.

"The key point of this is that we feel that the football program itself is an integral part of what the university is all about," Tim Kelley, a 1964 graduate who co-wrote the letter, told the Indianapolis Star. "It's not just football for football's sake."

Kelley said the letter is not asking that coach Tyrone Willingham be fired. He said a similar letter was sent to the board three years ago, when Bob Davie was coach.

The Fighting Irish started 8-0 in 2002, Willingham's first season as coach. Since then, they have gone 7-10.

Yeah, Notre Dame never takes themselves too seriously

I don't know if they'll ever realize that they've not only been passed up as an elite football school by many programs in the South, but have been lapped a few times...

I believe Willingham is a good X's and O's coach. Hopefully he will tank this year at Notre Dame, get fired, and then Texas can hire him as they shift Smack Browneye into his "Director of Recruiting" slot.

    I wouldn't sign my name to such self-important ****.

They should join the Big 10 and earn their way into the BCS like all the other schools however so many of my fellow alums still think they're above everything. Joining a conference worked wonders in rejuvenating the hoops program, after all.

in the context of the sig - using others' bandwidth. It's a pretty bad habit that tons of folks at this BBS have of putting images in their posts that aren't on their own bandwidth. They're not paying for the bandwidth that they're using to put images in their posts.

I like Willingham. I wish he'd just leave Notre Dame so they can find another excuse for why they'll never be elite again.

ND's recruiting also dropped significantly this year. Rivals had them ranked #32 behind powerful programs like Cal and BC. If this continues, the state of ND will get worse before it gets any better.

    Let's see ...

He kicks major ass in 2002-03 with a bunch of chumps recruited by a dick that looks like Bob Weir.

In 2003-04 he coaches a team to a better record that they should have played into, a squad full of players recruited by a dick that looks like Bob Weir.

    January, 2004?

He recruits, in his second time in the midwest (and his second time he's been expected to rape the **** out of south Texas, Floriad'er, and CA ...), a middling outfit.

He has yet to coach said outfit.

    He's F*CKING TY WILLINGHAM!!!

I'm a frickarin Mc from Chicago, a Catholic, a bit of an Irish freak.

    A major Irish freak.

This cat is the best thing to happen to South Bend since Ara, and my alumni id-e-arts can't understand it.

Past this, I've nothing to say ...

    Two words: BOSTON COLLEGE

Some more words: I don't think ND has been the same since David Gordon hit that field goal to ruin ND's championship run in 1993. No bowl wins in 10 years. Holtz leaving. Davie crashing the ship. Ty and the green jerseys. Some high school QB choosing Louisville over ND, repeat Louisville over ND...

I don't think you understand the expectations at Notre Dame very well if you think the Irish kicked "major ass" in 2002.

Are there any Notre Dame alumni in this thread that would like to explain for us what kicking "major ass" looks like, at ND? I have an idea and it doesn't include three losses, a mid-tier bowl appearance, and a colossal blowout loss to USC.

I know a few Notre Dame Alumni. One of them is a priest. And he writes letters to that effect when the team is sorry. Nicest guy in the world too. A damn priest. But he will write letters asking for a new coach. The Notre Dame fans are psycho.

no. I wasn't around in the late '40's. :I ND did win a fencing national title recently though :)

It's just different now. I remember when 1991 (clobbering Florida in the Sugar) was considered a bad year.

Oh and since Kagy made this thread about me I would like to add that I saw my old swim coach when ND came to Chicago to swim vs. Northwestern last month.
