according to espn chat chad ford... .Chad Ford: (1:39 PM ET ) OK big Sheed news coming in just one minute. Hold on, I think we may have a deal. I'll be back in one minute. Chad Ford: (1:43 PM ET ) It looks like the Pistons have traded for Sheed. I'm awaiting word on details but a very good source has confirmed that they have a "done deal."
Wow. I thought the pistons wanted cap room to sign Okur. I wonder who they traded? Wonder if NY will now trigger plan B.
Looks like the Pistons will be renting Wallace for the rest of the season. The Pistons WILL have cap room to pay for both Wallace and Okur at the end of the season. They will have moved contracts to open up room for Okur and then have Wallace's bird rights. But I dont see Wallace playing there after this season as the front court is too crowded with Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Dark and Okur. I see Wallace leaving Detroit in a Sign and Trade or leaving outright for the MLE somewhere else.
Detroit gets - Sheed and Mike James Atlanta gets - Chris Mills, Bobby Sura, Zelly Rebraca, 1st round draft pick Boston Gets - Chucky Atkins and Lindsey Hunter
According to Chad Ford's chat today http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=4819 Boston gets: Chucky Atkins, Lindsey Hunter and the Pistons first round pick this year. Detroit gets: Rasheed Wallace and Mike James Atlanta gets: Chris Mills, Zeljko Rebraca, Bob Sura and the Bucks first round pick owed to Detroit.
hmmmm detroit might look done with trading but the Celtics might still make a move.....look at what they recieved......what Ainge is looking.....and though they are down and not out....they attained a first rounder.....however it might be little to late.....if so the draft pick will defintely help showing the time to rebuild the Celtics totally...all they have is Paul Pierce and some yong talent..... yet Ainge believes he can still make the "mavs" of the east....I guess we will wait and see
I agree. And it is most likely to be a sign-n-trade to the WEST so that both Pistons and Rasheed can get more. I really think that is great news for us because who else Pistons can trade with? They do not want contracts back because they need the cap space to sign Okur. That leaves Clips, Warriors, Suns and Us (with TE). Clips and Suns do not need a PF and I do not see Rasheed and Warriors want each other. So, we are the only logical choice here with TE. Yao, Sheed, JJ, Mobley, Francis....definitely a title contender.
Sounds good in theory, but if Wallace does end up in Houston it means good-bye to Francis. Now way Les pays a luxary tax.
The Detroit Pistons won the Rasheed Wallace sweepstakes Thursday, ending his one-game Atlanta Hawks career, in a trade deadline swap that also involved the Boston Celtics, a Pistons source told ESPN Insider's Chad Ford. Detroit received Wallace and Mike James from Boston, while giving up Chucky Atkins, Lindsey Hunter, its No. 1 draft pick and an undisclosed amount of cash. Atlanta received Chris Mills from Boston, Zeljko Rebraca and Bob Sura from Detroit and the Bucks' No. 1 draft pick that was owed to the Pistons. Boston received Atkins, Hunter and the Pistons' aforementioned package of a No. 1 pick and cash, while surrendering Mills and James. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1739128
I really like the move for Detriot. The Sheed deal does not impact Okur's situation because they can sign Sheed after using his Bird Rights. Further it puts them in very powerful negotiations with Sheed next offseason. He might be able to make more and move to a sucky, under the cap team, take the MLE to a good team, or work with Detriot to get a little more than the MLE to stay with them or S & T to another good team. I don't see Sheed going to a sucky team just for a bigger contract and not so sure a sucky team would want that either, but nor do I think Sheed would settle for an MLE--he is too good a player for that kind of money unless the market has totally bottomed out. This Detriot team easily could come out of the East and looks to be contenders for a while.
Things could get really interesting in the East now, with Artest done indefinately, Detroit having the 2 Wallaces, and the Nets on a hot streak.
Well, they can not. FAs counts against the teams' salary cap. Therefore, Pistons will have to trade/renounce the right to Sheed in order to have the cap space back in order to sign Okur. Rememeber Barkley had to sign the 1 M contract first so that Rockets had the cap space to sign Quitten. Of course, Piston can resign Wallace and Okur then takes the MLE. However, Okur couldand will get better contracts from some other teams and Pistons can not match because they are over the cap.
If Rasheed wants to take the MLE, he can go anywhere he likes. However, if he wants to make more and do a sign-n-trad, he won't go to NY 1) NY is over the cap and Pistion would have to take contracts back. So it doesn't make any sense for Pistions to trade him to any teams without cap space 2) Even if there is an East team with salary space, Pistions would prefer to send Rasheed to the West. You always want to make trades with other conferences.
I don't think the Pistons would trade Wallace just for the TE. They want something for the effort. What could we give them? A 1st rounder in 2005+TE? for a S&T Wallace? That is the only way to get Wallace above MLE money and at the same time not send money back to Detroit and at the same time give Detroit something for the effort.
I definitely agree that the Pistons probably don't want to send Wallace to any of their Eastern Conference competition in the offseason. That really means sending him West.
How will Sheed's salary be calculated for next year since his contract will be over, and will this amount really be the difference between having more than the MLE available for Okur (or someone else). That would make things interesting if it is between Sheed, Okur or another FA. If they can get significantly under the cap I am not sure there won't be better options than Okur or Sheed, how many other "good teams" will have cap space. Maybe SA, but then only if the don't keep Ginobili.
I am assuming the trade is legit. Pencil in the Piston as the EC representative in the NBA Finals. Rasheed easily got the better of KMart and almost powered the anemic Hawks past the Nets in his only game for ATL. Rasheed's $17m expiring contract counts 150% against the Pistons cap unless they renounce him or until they re-sign Wallace. Renouncement means no Bird Rights. IMO, it is almost a given that the MLE is the best DET can offer Okur.
Rasheed on the Pistons is going to be disastrous for the rest of the eastern conference. He might as well be the best PF in the east aside from J O'neal even though I honestly think Wallace is the superior talent compared to O'neal.
