Watching some NBA show right now I heard PETER BS VESCEY talking. He said Sac does not want Allan Houston and that Webber is looking to go to the Rockets. Now that Vescey has said he is coming to the Rockets you know he aint coming! ------------------
C'mon now, lets get off this Vescey is an idiot bandwagon. Ok, so he is an idiot, but he still does actually have more info than most of us do. Im not saying he is always right, but Im not saying he is always wrong. He is definitely always dumb, but that doesnt JINX us in any way ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
I saw the show too, I thought it was interesting even though it came from Vecsey. ------------------ Fear the Spear
Im looking at Sacramento wanting to go after Carter Next Season. I think they would like to do a sign and trade with Houston instead of New York. Why give Allan Houston the Max when you can give it to Vince Carter?? ------------------ When I was Little I call in a local sports show and told them the Rockets should Trade Otis Thorpe for a Lottery Pick. They found me to be stupid.
I do believe in Vecsey's comments. I mean come on, if he was that stupid why would he be working for NBC. Chances are there is truth to what he said. ------------------
I saw that, too, and this is the only time that I am glad to agree with Vecsey. I hope he's right. He sounded relatively confident about it: that Webber basically looks like he's ready to be outta there; that the Rockets can sign him without a trade. Vecsey isn't the brightest star in the cosmos, but every once in awhile he has the inside scoop. And as a New Yorker, he knows better than to play homer when he knows the Rockets make a better situation for Webber, and his own team can't manage the trade. ------------------
I have no idea. If I were president of NBC, the man would have been out of a job years ago. ------------------ Never Underestimate the Heart of a Champion [This message has been edited by vj23k (edited May 12, 2001).]
"Vecsey is an idiot. He makes stuff up. Don't believe him. He's a liar. What? He said Webber's coming to Houston? Hey wait a minute, maybe Vecsey's not that bad." You guys kill me. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.
And I sounded really, really confident when I predicted Bush would lose the presidential election. As an extremely minor league pundit, let me tell you: We are trained to say everything with confidence, regardless of how little we really know. You can, uh, take my word for it. ------------------ Scottie, disappearing is your game.
The only problem I have here is why is Webber thinking this... now? They're in the middle of the playoffs. I can't see him talking about it or scoops getting out there right at this moment ... maybe I'm wrong. Also, though I am feeling better about the chances now than before (how many gave the Rockets zero shot to get Webber?), I still think it is going to come down to what team can come up with the best sign-and-trade package. How many stars, since the new CBA came in to effect, have just out and out left the team they had Bird Rights with to sign a max deal elsewhere? Antonio McDyess signed with Denver, leaving Phoenix with nothing, and Tom Gugliotta left Minnesota to sign outright with Phoenix. Scottie Quitten, Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway and Brian Grant all went the sign-and-trade route. In the case of Scottie, McGrady and Hill, they could have just signed outright with Houston and Orlando respectively since they had the cap room, but they wanted the extra cheese on the enchilada ($10-$18 million extra over 7 years). So the bottom line, I think, is going to be even if Webber wants to play for the Rockets, he's going to want the max salary that Sacramento can give him. Meaning he's going to pursue or encourage the Rockets, or any team, to go that direction. That means the Kings could then pursue a deal with any team that Webber is OK with, and since Sacramento still is a good team that could contend if they had a good power forward, you have to wonder if Portland (Rasheed Wallace) doesn't get involved. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockets are looking at this draft also as a way to possibly store up bait for Sacramento in a sign-and-trade (Zach Randolph?) It's all going to come down to Webber -- does he really want to be here over Sacramento, Orlando, Portland, Philly, Miami, New York, etc. etc. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET [This message has been edited by Clutch (edited May 12, 2001).]
Good points, Clutch. But: Miami? No depth. Perennial losers. Already power forward heavy. NY? Webber obviously is familiar with it. And Spree. But the spotlight is harsh there, and the team is a year away from Geritol. Portland? Poison. Philly? Maybe; doubt it. Orlando? I could see it; but looking at their salaries, they would likely have to trade away a lot. Webber has made comments here and there this year (take this for what it's worth) that he doesn't need the uber-maximum salary (12 million starting, 12% raise per year) to decide his next contract. Hell, we can almost give him the max; unless he wants to buy Oahu, we should be fine in that regard. At the same time, he says (was this in the ESPN article?) that he won't sign for the exception, either. Of course, this could mean "I'll take 'only' 10 million if I can play in Orlando." Hopefully, you can insert "Houston" at the end of that sentence instead. Still, you make a valid point in the sign-and-trade scenario. Would Webber leave Sacramento with nothing and risk a backlash? I hope so, unless Oeilpere's comments about Shandon and New Jersey mean we seek to get KVH...as long as we send KVH for Webber or to Detroit or Chicago for cap space (and we get rid of Cato in the process). ------------------
Concerns: * Like Clutch mentioned: why would any competitive player still in the playoffs be thinking about anything other than the playoffs right now. * Who is Peter's source? It's plausible that it's a Webber confidante, but more plausible that it's part of the NYPost/Knicks media machine that's been at work all week. An opening salvo if you will in the Knicks upcoming efforts to try to spook Petrie & the Maloofs into dealing Webber out of the conference (I don't think Petrie is that easy to spook). Vecsey is of course an idiot, so it's doubtful that he would see himself being used by the Knicks brass. It should be a fun summer, though. I wholeheartedly expect that Webber will sign w/ Houston. ------------------ women love me, fish fear me.
Although he's often full of sh!*, he does have his ear to the ground. He reported Shawn Kemp's barely-documented problems; he had the scoop on Phil Jackson going to the Lakers. But I thought about that, too. "Vecsey sucks, vecsey blows, Vecsey...what? Webber to Houston? Vecsey, YOU DA MAN!" I just hope he's right. ------------------
Someone refresh my memory -- who were McGrady and Hill traded for? Clutch -- I seem to remember Portland not having to trade Brian Grant, but it being more a situation of them choosing Wallace over him. In fact, wasn't he restricted? I'm not sure his case is similar to Webber's. Am I wrong?
DoD: Exactly. People on this board usually mock Vescey to kill a dull day, but now that he has some favorable gossip (no, it's not news), everyone freaks out. Come on... the guy's like the village idiot and a doctor's wife combined... can't keep his mouth shut about all the stuff he DOESN'T know. He's been right before... but often on stuff that you or I could guess just as well. He's also been wrong more often than not, on stuff that wouldn't even work salary-cap wise, meaning he doesn't even do his homework. Either he's the classic case of simply shaking the right people's hand or he stopped working once he got to the top... but listening to Vescey is like taking NBAtalk seriously. ------------------ I would believe only in a God who could dance. - Friedrich Nietzsche Boston College - NCAA Hockey National Champions 2001
TheFreak, Grant Hill was traded for Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace. I don't believe there was a sign and trade involved with McGrady. ------------------
freak, Grant was dealed in the gigantic Kemp, Grant, Weatherspoon deal. T-Mac was signed outright, I believe. ------------------ Never Underestimate the Heart of a Champion
McGrady was traded for a future first-round pick. ------------------ Charles Barkely on the Raptors defeating the Knicks in Round 1 :"I think it was the Lord. The Lord was with the Raptors. You know the Knicks like to talk so much about religion, but I think the Lord was a Raptor fan."
* Like Clutch mentioned: why would any competitive player still in the playoffs be thinking about anything other than the playoffs right now.> why? 'cause the rest of the kings have no heart. with pollard and vlade all but admitting defeat and no backcourt, how would you feel? hell, chris is playing with a bum wheel, and vlade's whining about being demoralized?!?!? c'mon. i can't wait till c-webb is wearing the jammies. ------------------
