Looks like Sprewell trying to make his case for getting Webber to NY. He told the Knicks there are too many guards on the team and complained about some of the performances during the playoffs...he isnt suggeting anything new or anything, but it does look like he's trying to get the knicks to start laying the ground work for getting webber...

    This is from AP:

Another target of Sprewell's criticism may have been Allan Houston, who was outplayed by Toronto's Alvin Williams down the stretch of Game 5.

Houston is expected to opt out of his contract and become a free agent this summer.

"It's really too soon for me to sit here and say I'm leaving. I still want to be here," Houston said. "In New York, when the fans kill you, it's out of love because they love the Knicks so much. That's why I want to win a championship here."

Despite his desire to stay, Houston plays the same position Sprewell and the Knicks will likely try to move him in a sign-and-trade deal -- perhaps for Chris Webber if the
Sacramento Kings free agent tells the team he wants to move on to a new city.

"When you go out in the first round, obviously that doesn't cut it.
So this is very painful," Knicks general manager Scott Layden said. "We need to look at this team in its entirety and make
    decisions accordingly."

    Come on Allan....

    HUH?

    Right.

Problem is, what does NY have to offer in the form of a sign-and-trade, with them being WAY over the cap, this is the only way they add CWebb to the fold?

Bskball.com (UGH!) is reiterating a rumor that I've heard\read before: Houston will not agree to a S&T with SAC, and would rather opt out and enter the market.

They'd have to get a 3-way deal going, which is going to be hard, though I would think that SEA may be a possibility.

I dont know if this has been mentioned before, but would Houston agree to come to Houston [IMG]

I mean as a sweet shooting SF he would fit perfectly in our system where other players can get him good looks. Plus, he would provide some additional veteran leadership (I know he is not that much of a veteran, but he has been to the finals and is always playing in the playoffs). I say if Webber goes elsewhere we pursue Houston or even facilitate the deal with NYC so we can maybe get Houston and perhaps an additional player, ala a Turkolu from Sacramento or Othella back from NY depending on the deal.

Yeah the fans love Allan as long as he is hitting jumpers. And maybe Sprewell should look in the mirror and stop blaming other people. If I had a choice I would take Allan anyday of the week over Sprewell.

How bout a 4-way blockbuster between Sac, Houston, NY, and Seattle:

    HOU gets: CWebb
SAC gets: Mo, Shandon, Baker?, future pick(s
SEA gets: A.Houston, Los, Othella, future pick(s)
    NYK gets: Payton

Not too bad of a deal for anyone, probably would be more players involved to match salaries. Of course, it is probably about as likely to happen as Bill Gates going broke, but you never know... [IMG]

What do you guys think of A. Houston's defensive skills? I love that guy's shot and his professionalism. I mean just read that comment about NY fans. That's a class act. Type of guy the Rockets could use. I think a guy like Houston or Steve Smith would be great at the small forward for us ... as long as they could play a little bit of defense as well.

I think Houston is the perfect fit. His defense isnt amazing, but Anderson doenst always live up to his defensive abilties either and it is hard not to be a better defender than Walt. However, at a listed 6'6 he may be a little undersized for todays SF (of course Shandon is even smaller).

    his season stats
    45% shooter, 38% on threes
    18.7 ppg
    2.2 apg
    3.62 rpg
    .66 spg
    2 turnovers a game

note that houston comes from a good team defense situation and his knowledge and experience there would certainly be beneficial.

Because of whos out there, I put Houston high up on my wish list this summer. We all saw how our team clicked and played really well when Walt was shooting hot. I know Walt's end of the year 3 pt% is pretty good, but it is the inconsistency that I cant stand. You cant shoot 10% over a month and then comeback with a couple of 6/8 3 pt shooting games. Ill take the 6/8 games, but the inconsistency really wuins any team momementum or rythm and Houston brings it consistently every night.

Anway, back on point, I still think the chances of landing Webber are 50/50 for Rockets simply because of NY's situation. But, I hope and know the ROckets are presently pursuing other strategies as well and I hope acquiring Houston is at least given some though.

Size matters less in the zone.

I don't think the rockets could swing Mo, Houston, and Dream. Mo and Dream are more pressing needs over Houston. I don't think Webber and Houston work either.

I think I would rate Houston as the second best FA next to Webber.

i've lost intersts in CWebb. if we get him great, but i wouldn't sell the ranch for him. he either accepts the 10 or 11 mil we offer or C-ya twice a year buddy. i think we have what we need already except for a defensive minded small forward ala Stacy Augmon type player (Shane Battier). we already have a big three scoring machine in Francis, Mobley and Taylor. we need a defensive minded Center and small forward to keep them scoring. as long as they average 8.5 pts a game to keep the opposing team honest defensively and rebound like madmen...we are set, just a couple of years to gel and...

You guys think Detroit might shell out the bones to get Houston back? From what I remember he didn't leave on bad terms with the club...Detroit is going to have a lot of money to spend and there aren't a whole lot of players to spend it on...so Houston might be a possibility for them. I know they technically play the same position, but they could really use a guy to take the pressure off Stack.

Does anyone know of what kind of trade package new york could put together for a Chris Webber? Do they even have a group that Sac could want? And would they want to deplete their own team to get one guy? I think the rockets could have a chance. But like someone else said, I think we can survive without him if he ends up going someplace else. It's be nice to see him in jammies, but lets not sell the farm to do it...

At SG/SF I'd rather go after Predrag Stojakovic. He's only 24. And while I think he is more productive than Houston he will probably come at a lower price tag.

Peja is too valuable for that team. Webber being bored in Sacramento is one thing. For those guys who have no problem with the place, it's important to hang onto them.

    Peja's a great player, though.

I think we will still have a good chance. So what Sprewell is trying to get Webber to come there. We've got Franchise and the Cat trying to get Webber coming over here.

Yeah, and we've beaten those "friendship" odds before. Alvin Williams on the Raptors: good buddy of Cuttino Mobley.

Of course, Alvin and his teammates are doing alright for themselves at the moment, but hey, that's where we wanna be.

is it feasible we could afford both houston and taylor? what is houston making this year, and what might he expect on the open market? what about taylor? decent year, but was hurt. no way he gets the max, is there?

and one more thing, and please forgive my ignorance, why is he not bird-right eligible? same for hakeem? what are the conditions/restrictions?

houston intrigues me, but only if we can keep taylor.

    thanks,

"is it feasible we could afford both houston and taylor? " - Only if Taylor doesn't exercise his option. I figure by cutting Anderson, Hakeem, Bullard, & Carlos then add 3 draft picks we can get to 13 under the cap. That is realistically enough to get one person.

"what is houston making this year, and what might he expect on the open market?" - This year he made 9 million. Max would be $11,000,000 or 30% of team's salary cap. Estimates are that the cap will increase to 43.5 mil thus he could get up to 13.05 mil. I expect the Knicks to offer him that much. They don't seem to be concerned about money.

"what about taylor? decent year, but was hurt. no way he gets the max, is there?" - I doubt it. We can only offer what is available under the cap or a 10% raise. Who else with capspace wants him: Chicago has Brandt & Fizer, Clippers?, Detroit maybe. I think he will probably get 4 to 6 mill

"and one more thing, and please forgive my ignorance, why is he not bird-right eligible?" - No. he signed as a free agent last year. He needs two more years to be eligible. If we had traded for him from LAC he would have been.

"same for hakeem? what are the conditions/restrictions?" he is but if we don't release him or sign him at a lesser amount we won't get under the cap. His contract counts 1.5 times (roughlty 25 mil) his previous contract until he is released or resigned.
